Fans of the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters have something new to look forward to. Netflix has officially confirmed that a sequel to the record-breaking movie is now in development. The news was announced just days before the original film competed at the 98th Academy Awards.

According to the announcement from Netflix, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to lead the next movie. The sequel will also be the first project created under a new multi-year partnership between the filmmakers and the streaming platform.

The original film premiered in June 2025 and was made together with Sony Pictures Animation. It quickly turned into a huge success. By March, Netflix reported that the movie had passed more than 500 million views, making it the most-watched film in the platform’s history.

The story follows a fictional K-pop girl group called HUNTR/X. During the day, the members are world-famous idols performing for huge crowds. But when night falls, the trio uses their music to protect the world from dangerous demons. The characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey create a magical barrier with their songs to stop creatures that try to steal human souls.

Director Maggie Kang spoke about the sequel and said she feels proud that audiences connected with the story and its cultural roots. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” she said. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Chris Appelhans shared similar thoughts about returning to the story. “These characters are like family to us. Their world has become our second home,” he said. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

The film has not only been popular with viewers but also received major recognition in the awards world. The song Golden, performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, became the first K-pop track to win a Grammy Award. The movie also took home Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards.

The sequel is still in the early stages of production, and Netflix has not shared a release date yet. Industry insiders expect the project to take time because of the complex animation work involved.

For now, fans can still watch the original film on Netflix while waiting to see how the story continues. The next chapter is expected to explore more of the mythology behind the demon-fighting idols and introduce new challenges for the group as their adventure continues.
