Scarlett Johansson has officially stepped onto the set of The Exorcist, as filming for the new horror movie began in New York City on March 13. The update came directly from director Mike Flanagan, who shared the news on social media along with a behind-the-scenes image from day one of production. He wrote, “Day 1… here we go. #theexorcist,” confirming that the long-awaited reboot is finally underway.

This new film is a fresh take on the classic 1973 horror story, not a remake. Flanagan has made it clear in past comments that he wants to bring something new and different to the franchise. He said, “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe.”

Johansson is leading the cast, marking her first time working in the horror genre. She was the first actor confirmed for the project back in late 2025. The film also features a large cast that includes Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, and Carla Gugino, along with several of Flanagan’s frequent collaborators.

The project has taken time to come together. Earlier plans for a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer were dropped after that film did not perform well. In 2024, the studio decided to move in a new direction and bring in Flanagan to lead a reboot instead. Work on the film was delayed while he finished other projects, including a TV adaptation of Carrie, before turning his full attention to this movie.

Filming is now in full swing in New York, with Michael Fimognari working as the cinematographer. The movie is backed by Blumhouse Productions, along with other production companies, and will be released by Universal Pictures.

The release date is set for March 12, 2027. Fans quickly noticed the timing, as it falls on a Friday the 13th, which adds an extra layer of excitement for horror lovers.

This new version of The Exorcist aims to start a new chapter for the franchise while still respecting what came before. With a strong cast and a director known for horror storytelling, expectations are already high.

Casting Scarlett Johansson in her first horror role makes this project even more interesting. It feels like a big shift for her, and it could bring something fresh to the genre. The choice to reboot instead of continue the previous story also seems like the right move after the last film.
