Sarah Michelle Gellar has opened up about the sudden cancellation of the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and she says the decision came as a complete surprise.

Speaking to People, Gellar shared that she learned about the project being dropped by Hulu at a very unexpected moment. She was about to go on stage at the SXSW Film & TV Festival when she got the call. She said, “Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming.”

She also pointed out how strange the timing was. The news came during a big weekend for both her and director Chloé Zhao. Gellar was promoting her new film, while Zhao was being recognized during awards season. Gellar explained, “No one saw this coming, including the head of Searchlight. I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie… That says something.”

The reboot, which was being developed under the title “New Sunnydale,” was meant to introduce a new lead character while staying connected to the original story. However, Gellar revealed that there were issues behind the scenes from early on.

She said one executive involved in the project was not supportive of the original series. “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” she said.

According to Gellar, this created problems during development, especially because the original show has a strong fan base and deep meaning for those involved. She explained that it made the process harder from the start.

Zhao also spoke about the situation while talking to Variety and CNN. She said she was not shocked by the cancellation, but still valued the experience. “We, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show,” she said, adding that the goal was always to respect the story and its fans.

Gellar admitted she feels disappointed, especially about how the decision was handled. She also said she worries about letting fans down. “That hurts. Saddened at how it was handled and when it was handled,” she said. Even so, she reassured fans that the original series still holds its place. “But ‘Buffy’ is timeless… that legacy is still there — for them.”

It’s disappointing to see a project like this end so suddenly, especially when it had strong people behind it. It also shows how much behind-the-scenes decisions can affect what we see on screen. At the same time, it’s good to hear that the original show’s legacy remains strong. What do you think about the reboot being canceled? Do you agree with what Gellar said?
