Fans Roast Oscars Snack Boxes for Being Tiny and Cheap
Even though the Oscars are known as the height of Hollywood glamour, the food for guests was surprisingly simple this year. The Academy Awards faced social media criticism after a video showed the snack boxes given to attendees.
Guests at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles reportedly received a cardboard box with just three items: a bottle of water, a small bag of SkinnyPop popcorn, and a box of dark chocolate Raisinets.
The video, shared by an InStyle staff member, quickly went viral on X as fans reacted with disbelief. Many people online compared the snacks to budget airline meals or school lunches. Some even mentioned the Fyre Festival as a similar disappointment.
“Oscars snack box looking like a budget airline meal,” one social media user commented, questioning why wealthy stars were getting such simple food at an event where tickets can cost as much as a house deposit.
Other reactions were just as blunt. “I’ve seen prisoners get better care packages than this,” joked another viewer. Many accused the Academy of being cheap, pointing out that a major awards show usually offers more impressive catering.
The snacks included a note from host Conan O’Brien, who tried to make the situation funny. “Good luck tonight, have fun, and remember that loud, enthusiastic laughter is good for your health and my ego,” the note read.
He also called the collection a “moderately happy meal” and joked that the items would be expensive at a regular movie theater. Even with the humor, fans didn’t hold back on their criticism.
This isn’t the first time awards shows have faced backlash for simple food. Earlier this year, the Critics’ Choice Awards were called out for giving a small plate of pita chips, grapes, and cherry tomatoes. In past ceremonies, stars like Oprah Winfrey have refused to eat casual snacks like pizza in paper bags, saying she didn’t want to mess up her makeup.
Outside of the snacks, the night was still a big celebration. The host Conan O’Brien has been enjoying a career comeback, and he even joked about being “host for life” in a sketch with Robert Downey Jr.
The top winner of the evening was One Battle After Another, taking Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. Michael B. Jordan also won his first Oscar for his lead role in Sinners. Other films discussed included Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters.
Even with the tiny snack boxes, the Oscars remained a major night for Hollywood’s top talent. Fans on social media just made sure everyone knew exactly what they thought about the modest offerings.
