‘Sonic 4’ Teaser Unveils Title and Epic Comeback of a Fan-Favorite Character
A new teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has excited fans by confirming that Jim Carrey will return as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. The short clip features Amy Rose’s hammer shattering a surface to reveal the Chaos Emeralds, with Carrey’s voice warning, “You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun.”
The trailer also gives glimpses of the movie’s star-studded cast. Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic, Idris Elba voices Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey is back as Tails, and Keanu Reeves appears as Shadow. Other familiar faces include James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, and the teased return of Metal Sonic. Fans have already noticed references to the iconic Sonic Boom.
Carrey’s comeback is notable, considering he has spoken about retiring from acting. In 2022, he told reporters, “Well, I’m retiring… If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

He also shared his love for a quieter life, saying, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas. I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Carrey explained his reason for returning to the Sonic franchise was partly financial: “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027. A spin-off movie is also planned for 2028, and fans are speculating that it will feature Shadow the Hedgehog in a central role.
