John Boyega Confirms Discussions About Returning To ‘Star Wars’ as Finn
John Boyega has given Star Wars fans new hope that his character, Finn, could return to the franchise. Speaking at MEGACON Orlando, the actor revealed that he has been in contact with Lucasfilm president and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni.
During a panel, a fan suggested Boyega get Filoni on the phone, and he surprised the audience by saying, “I actually have, actually.” While he didn’t provide details about their conversations, the admission signals that Finn could be making a comeback in future Star Wars projects.
This is especially significant since Filoni is now leading the creative direction of the franchise. Many fans have felt that Finn’s story was underdeveloped after his strong introduction in The Force Awakens, a concern Boyega has voiced before.
He has previously criticized Disney for sidelining him and other diverse cast members. In a 2020 interview, he said, “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side.
It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.” Boyega added that while the studio seemed to have a clear plan for the white leads, performers like himself and Kelly Marie Tran were given much less screen time.
Boyega also shared that he originally imagined Finn having a deeper connection to the Force and a closer partnership with Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. “I think I assumed [Finn] was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script, or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script,” he explained at a fan convention last year.
He even pictured a scenario where Finn and Rey might face each other in a dramatic showdown similar to Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. The possibility of a reunion is growing as Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey in an upcoming film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Ridley has expressed excitement at the idea of working with Boyega again, though Lucasfilm has not confirmed any casting for Finn yet. Fans are eagerly watching for updates as talks with Filoni continue.
Outside of Star Wars, Boyega has been busy with other projects. He recently wrapped filming Attack the Block 2, returning to the role of Moses in the sci-fi action sequel set in London. He is also filming the prequel series The Book of Eli, portraying a younger version of Denzel Washington’s character, exploring the early post-apocalyptic world.
Boyega’s career continues to thrive across film, television, and voice work, while he remains a vocal advocate for better representation in Hollywood. Whatever his next move is, fans and the industry are paying close attention.
