Tom Hanks is known as one of the nicest and most reliable actors in Hollywood, but his career has not been perfect. Over the years, there have been a few moments where things didn’t go smoothly, both on set and with the public.

One well-known story involves Henry Winkler, who said Hanks played a part in him being removed as director from Turner & Hooch after less than two weeks of filming. Hanks also faced criticism earlier in his career when he was cast in Philadelphia.

Even though the role later earned him an Oscar, he received a lot of negative mail at the time from people who didn’t believe he could handle such a serious performance. Still, the biggest misstep often linked to Hanks is the 1990 film The Bonfire of the Vanities.

The movie didn’t land well with audiences or critics, and even Hanks has admitted it didn’t turn out right. Director Brian De Palma later spoke about what went wrong in interviews, explaining that the film lost its edge during production.

“The initial concept of it was incorrect; if you’re going to do The Bonfire of the Vanities, you would have to make it a lot darker and more cynical,” he said. De Palma believed the team made a mistake by trying to soften the main character.

In the original story, Sherman McCoy is not meant to be likable, but the film tried to make him more relatable. “But because it was such an expensive movie, we tried to humanise the Sherman McCoy character, a very unlikeable character,” he explained.

The changes were partly due to the studio wanting a broader audience for such a costly project. When looking back, De Palma also questioned the casting choice. He admitted that Hanks was picked because he was a big name, but not necessarily the best fit for the role.

“I think John Lithgow would have been a better choice for Sherman McCoy, because he would have got the blue-blood arrogance of the character,” he said. Even with these setbacks, Hanks has continued to build a strong career.

In 2024, he worked again with director Robert Zemeckis on the film Here, which used digital effects to show characters at different ages. While the movie didn’t do well in theaters, it later found more viewers online.

Looking ahead, Hanks is returning as Woody in Toy Story 5, set to release in June. He is also working on a follow-up to Greyhound, which started filming in early 2026 and is expected to arrive on Apple TV+ in 2027.

Despite a few bumps along the way, Tom Hanks remains one of the most active and respected actors in the industry, continuing to take on new projects while revisiting some of his most famous roles.
