Usher Gets Emotional Talking About Diddy and the Music Icon’s Valuable Contributions
Usher is speaking out about his long-standing friendship with Sean “Diddy” Combs, even as the music mogul serves a prison sentence. In a recent interview with Forbes’ The Enterprise Zone, the “Nice & Slow” singer, 47, reflected on his decades-long relationship with Combs, who is currently serving 50 months after being convicted on two charges of transportation to engage in p*****.
When asked by Forbes writer Jabari Young to give one-word thoughts about influential people in his life, Usher immediately said “Legacy” when referring to Combs.
Usher acknowledged the controversy surrounding Combs but emphasized his personal experience with him. “We can’t ignore the reality of the history,” he said. “In many ways, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer. I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented.”
The two stars have worked together since Usher was a teenager, and their friendship has stayed strong over the years. “I can’t, with any sense of humanity, not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who transition culture and ideas into something that’s tangible and becomes business,” Usher said. “So many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that. And that’s why I see him as legacy.”

Referring to Combs by his old nickname “Puff,” Usher described him as a mentor and a strict teacher, someone who taught him valuable lessons about business in real time. “I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do and the way that he positioned himself as a businessman,” he added.
Combs’ legal troubles have drawn global attention. In September 2024, he was indicted on charges of s** trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in pr*****. He has denied allegations from dozens of accusers. Following his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in p*****, Combs began serving his 50-month sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, with a revised release date of April 25, 2028.
Usher’s comments underline the complexity of his relationship with Combs, separating his personal experience from public perception. “So many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that,” Usher said, highlighting the influence Combs has had on music, culture, and business.
In my view, Usher’s perspective shows loyalty and respect for a mentor who helped shape his career. It’s a reminder that public controversies do not always reflect personal experience. What do you think about Usher’s take on Diddy’s legacy? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
