HBO Drops First ‘Harry Potter’ Trailer and Fans Are Losing It Over the New Cast and Surprise Premiere Date
HBO has shared the first trailer for its new TV version of Harry Potter, giving fans a first look at a completely new cast and a fresh take on the famous story. The preview was shown during a press event in London, with details reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
This new series will retell the books over several seasons instead of one film per story. The first season focuses on the beginning of the journey, based on the first novel. The show is using the original book name, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The trailer introduces a new young cast. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Snape.
Behind the scenes, Francesca Gardiner is leading the project, while Mark Mylod is directing several episodes. The show is expected to be a major release for the platform. Warner Bros. Discovery executive JB Perrette described it as “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”

The biggest surprise from the trailer is the release timing. The show will arrive on Christmas Day in 2026, which is earlier than expected. Many fans believed it would not come out until 2027.
At the same time, the series has already faced strong reactions online. The casting of Snape has sparked debate, especially with Essiedu taking on a role that looked very different in past films.
The actor has spoken about the backlash and serious threats he has received. He said, “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you.’ It really matters. The reality is that if I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ While I hope I’ll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.” He also explained why he still wants to be part of the project, adding, “The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate — of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it.”
The show also brings attention back to J.K. Rowling, who is involved as an executive producer. Her public views have caused debate in recent years. HBO executive Casey Bloys responded by saying those opinions are personal and separate from the series.
Meanwhile, original film star Daniel Radcliffe has shown support for the new lead actor. He said, “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me.” He also admitted that he learned a lot while filming the original movies, saying, “I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”
The new series is clearly trying to bring the story back in a bigger and more detailed way. With a full TV format, there is more time to explore the world and characters.
This project has a lot of pressure on it. The original films are still loved, so fans will compare everything. But a series format could give the story more depth than before. The early release date also shows how confident the studio is. The strong reactions online prove people still care deeply about this world.
