Tom Cruise Didn’t Hold Back When Talking About His Worst Movie
Tom Cruise has built his career on loving movies. He often talks about how important the big screen is and how much he respects filmmaking. It is rare to hear him criticize a project, even his own. But earlier in his career, he was more open about things that did not work.
One film he has spoken about in a very honest way is Cocktail, released in 1988. The movie was a big hit at the box office and helped make him even more famous. Still, critics did not like it at all.
It even picked up a Razzie Award for Worst Picture. Over time, Cruise admitted that the film had some real problems behind the scenes. Looking back, he explained that the story and setting never fully came together.
He felt the movie lacked a sense of realism, especially when it came to where it was supposed to take place. Parts of the film were shot in Ontario, which was meant to stand in for New York City. For Cruise, that never felt believable.
“What were some of the mistakes with that one?” he said while reflecting on the project. He called it one of his “secret pains” and made it clear that it was not an experience he looks back on fondly.
He went on to explain that the setting made it hard for him to connect with the story. “I know, I know, man,” he said. “What can you say is wrong with the film? I never believed I was in New York. It just was not the night scene in New York.” For him, that missing feeling hurt the entire movie.
The moment that really stayed with him happened when he watched the finished film in a theater. He was sitting with his then-wife, Mimi Rogers, seeing it the same way audiences did for the first time. What he felt in that moment was confusion.
“You sit there, and you go, ‘What the hell happened?’” he recalled. Then he added, “When we saw it on the screen, we go, ‘What the f**k is that? What the hell was that?” It was a rare moment where Cruise openly questioned one of his own movies.
Even with that experience, it did not slow him down. In the years that followed, he became known for choosing strong projects and delivering major hits. His career has been filled with big action films and serious roles that have kept him at the top of Hollywood.
Now, he is still pushing forward. After Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning in 2025, he is working on a new film called Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The movie is planned for an IMAX release in October and includes actors like Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, and Riz Ahmed.
He is also getting ready to film Broadsword, a World War II story directed by Christopher McQuarrie. There are also reports that he could take on a rare villain role in a new version of Miami Vice, directed by Joseph Kosinski.
Cruise continues to stay active and take on new challenges. Even a film like Cocktail, which he openly admits did not work, became part of the path that shaped his career.
