Jack Nicholson’s (88) Bold Statement About His Impact on Hollywood Stars
Jack Nicholson built a reputation as one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Over the years, he earned multiple Academy Awards and became one of the most reliable stars at the box office. Studios trusted him because his films usually made strong returns.
During his career, Nicholson was very open about his success. In an interview with The Washington Post, he spoke confidently about his impact on the industry. He believed his work, both as an actor and director, helped shape the careers of others.
One example he pointed to was his film Goin’ South, which he directed. Even though the movie did not perform well financially, Nicholson still defended it. He said, “Goin’ South produced more million-dollar actors from obscurity than any movie in history.” He was referring to the cast, which included names like Mary Steenburgen, John Belushi, Christopher Lloyd, and Danny DeVito.

Where most actors might shrink, he stayed composed, but always on the edge of exploding.

Looking closer, not all of those actors were unknown at the time. Steenburgen was new, but others were already gaining attention. Belushi was becoming popular through television, while Lloyd and DeVito were appearing in a successful sitcom. Still, the film brought together several people who would later become major stars.
Nicholson’s confidence came from a long track record of success. After his early breakthrough, most of his projects performed well, which is rare in the film industry. Even when his work behind the camera did not reach the same level, he continued to show a strong understanding of talent.
His career shows both success and bold self-belief. While some of his claims may be debated, his influence on Hollywood is clear.
Nicholson’s comments show both confidence and experience. He may have exaggerated a bit, but he clearly had a good eye for talent. It is not easy to stay successful for so many years in such a competitive industry.
