Amazon’s upcoming Mass Effect TV show might be getting a major makeover before it even hits screens. According to a report from The Ankler, Peter Friedlander, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of global TV, is asking the writers to adjust the scripts to make the series “more appealing to non-gamers.”

This isn’t exactly welcome news for longtime fans of the game, who have been eagerly waiting to see the universe of Commander Shepard brought to life. The original Mass Effect games have a devoted following, known for their deep storylines, character relationships, and sci-fi world-building. Changing the scripts to target people who haven’t played the games could risk alienating the very audience that built the franchise.

Adapting video games for TV has never been easy. Shows like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have been criticized for being too confusing, relying on a parade of references rather than telling a strong story. On the flip side, some adaptations, like the Halo series, have been criticized for feeling flat or “having absolutely no vibes,” as former PC Gamer producer Natalie Clayton said. Mass Effect faces the tricky task of pleasing both gamers and casual viewers.

Meanwhile, the future of BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, has been uncertain since EA’s Saudi-backed buyout. A wave of layoffs in 2025 affected many of the studio’s veterans, leaving staff to wonder about their long-term future. Despite this, fans can still look forward to the next Mass Effect game, which is in development, and other similar CRPGs. Owlcat’s new sci-fi RPG, Exodus, scheduled for 2027, promises a Mass Effect-style experience, with many former BioWare developers involved.

The rewrite request from Amazon highlights the ongoing challenge of turning video games into TV shows. Balancing the expectations of hardcore fans with the need to appeal to a wider audience is never easy, but it could determine whether Mass Effect becomes a success or a cautionary tale.

We hope the show keeps the heart of the game intact. A story that tries too hard to cater to non-gamers risks losing the depth that made the original games so memorable. What do you think? Should the show change to attract new viewers, or stick to what made the games great? Share your thoughts in the comments.
