A new season of Rick and Morty is almost here, and the first trailer gives a clear idea of the kind of chaos fans can expect. Adult Swim has shared an early look at season nine, and it does not hold back on the madness.

The show returns on May 24 with a 10-episode run, following the end of season eight last summer. This time, the story once again throws Rick, Morty, and the rest of the family into strange and dangerous situations, including a fight against a bizarre enemy made out of couch cushions. In the middle of the chaos, Beth questions what is happening, asking, “Why is the furniture attacking us?”

The trailer also shows Rick waking Morty up in his usual aggressive way, shouting, “Rise and shine, motherfucker! It’s time to train.” The main voice cast remains the same, with Ian Cardoni as Rick, Harry Belden as Morty, and Sarah Chalke returning as Beth, alongside Chris Parnell and Spencer Grammer.

There is also a moment in the trailer that jokes about how long the series has been going. A narrator says, “Anything is possible when everything is possible: 100 years of Rick and Morty continues with a new season.” Rick follows that up with, “Season nine, baby. Only an indefinite number more.” While said as a joke, the show has already been renewed through season 12.

Season eight had its own standout moments, including guest appearances from James Gunn and Zack Snyder, who both voiced themselves. The series has stayed one of the most-watched comedies on cable, and Adult Swim is continuing to expand its world. A new spin-off focused on President Curtis, played by Keith David, is also in development.

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Dan Harmon spoke about how the show is written. He explained, “My part of it is, I’ll just always insist on the modular, one-off thing,” adding that these standalone episodes take more effort. He also said, “Serialization is a glorious, wonderful thing that happens automatically to a show that people love.”

Season nine looks set to continue mixing random adventures with bigger story ideas, while keeping the same unpredictable tone that fans expect.

The show is at its best when it stays simple and just focuses on being weird and funny instead of trying to connect everything too tightly. That balance is what made it popular in the first place.
