Ralph Fiennes Says Tilda Swinton Would Be Perfect Voldemort as He Steps Back
Ralph Fiennes is speaking openly about the future of Lord Voldemort as a new Harry Potter TV series moves forward. During a recent appearance on The Claudia Winkleman Show on April 10, he shared his thoughts on who could take over the role he made famous.
Fiennes played Voldemort in the original Harry Potter films, and fans have been wondering if he might return for the new version. He said he had been asked about coming back a few years ago and was open to it at the time. However, nothing ever came from those talks. He explained it simply, saying, “I said, ‘Yes, I’d love to.’ But then, nothing’s happened. I think that ship has sailed.”
With that chapter likely closed, attention has turned to who could play the character next. During the conversation, the host mentioned Tilda Swinton as a possible choice. Fiennes supported the idea right away and said she would be “fantastic” in the role. His comment has since caught the attention of fans who are already discussing the possibility online.
The new Harry Potter series, being developed by HBO, is still in the process of finalizing its cast. Reports from the network say several main roles have already been filled, but the casting of Voldemort is still undecided.
This is partly because the character does not fully appear right away in the story. In the early part of the series, Voldemort only shows up briefly, which means the actor chosen might not have a major role until later seasons.
According to statements from HBO executive Casey Bloys, the team is still working through final decisions as they prepare for the show’s release. There is pressure to complete casting before the planned premiere later this year.
While many roles are being recast, there will still be a small connection to the original films. Warwick Davis is expected to return as Professor Flitwick, which gives longtime fans something familiar to look forward to.
The first trailer has already introduced the new main cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley.
Outside of the Harry Potter world, Fiennes is staying very active. He is currently performing in the play Grace Pervades, which looks at the life of artist Henry Fuseli. He is also working on a film called The Beacon, which he wrote and directed. The project is expected to appear at festivals later this year.
He has also been gaining attention for his role in Conclave. For now, the question of who will become the next Voldemort is still open, but Fiennes has made it clear who he thinks could bring something new to the role.
