Dax Shepard Reveals Why He Clashed With Eric Dane Early On
Dax Shepard opened up about a difficult and unexpected part of his past involving Eric Dane. In an interview with CNN, Shepard shared that the two did not get along at all when they first met, even though they were both attending the same recovery meetings.
He explained that their first impressions of each other were negative right away. Shepard said, “Eric Dane, I can now say I met in recovery, and we hated each other. I hated him!” The tension between them did not go away quickly. Instead, it built up over time and eventually reached a breaking point.
According to Shepard, things escalated during one meeting when he felt Dane was being too aggressive toward a younger member of the group. That moment pushed him to confront the situation directly. He said the argument got so intense that he challenged Dane to take it outside. Both men walked out of the meeting ready to fight.
Even though it almost turned physical, the situation stopped before anything serious happened. They did not actually fight, and instead, they kept showing up to the same meetings in the months and years that followed. Over time, their relationship slowly changed.
Shepard said that as they continued their recovery journeys, he began to understand Dane in a different way. He learned more about Dane’s personal life and the struggles he had gone through growing up. Dane had lost his father at a young age, something Shepard also experienced in his own life.
That shared pain helped them connect. Shepard explained how his view of Dane shifted as he got to know him better. He said, “I came to fall in love with a very scared man trying and hoping he had become a man, and I related.” What started as anger eventually turned into respect and friendship.
The two actors became close enough to spend time together outside of meetings and talk openly about their pasts. Their story shows how relationships can change when people take the time to understand each other.
Dane passed away earlier this year at the age of 53 after living with ALS. He had publicly shared his diagnosis the year before. Even while dealing with the illness, he continued working and remained active in his career. He completed work on another season of Euphoria before his death.
More about his life is expected to come out later this year with the release of his memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments. The book is expected to share personal stories from different stages of his life.
Shepard, meanwhile, continues to stay active in entertainment. His podcast Armchair Expert has grown into one of the most popular shows in its space. It recently received a Golden Globe nomination, showing how much it has expanded in recent years.
