Alec Baldwin, 68, Opens up About Considering Retirement After Recent Struggles
Alec Baldwin says he has seriously thought about retiring after everything that happened following the Rust tragedy. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on April 13, the actor spoke openly about how much his life and priorities have changed in recent years.
Baldwin explained that he no longer feels the same connection to work that he once had. Instead of wanting to be on movie sets, he said he now prefers staying home with his family and focusing on a quieter life.
He said, I don’t want to leave my house anymore. According to Baldwin, the events surrounding Rust deeply affected him. In 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed in an accidental shooting on the set of the film.
The tragedy was followed by years of investigations, lawsuits, and criminal charges, all of which placed Baldwin under intense public attention. Speaking on the podcast, he said the past few years changed how he looks at his future.
He shared that he spent much of the last three and a half years at home and grew used to being around his wife and children rather than working constantly.
Baldwin added, I want to retire and stay home with my kids. The actor is father to seven young children, and he said family life now matters more to him than returning to the stress of filming projects.
He also described the legal battle connected to Rust as extremely painful and difficult. The involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin was dismissed in 2024, but he said the experience took a heavy emotional and physical toll.
Even after the case changed direction, he still had to return to Montana to finish Rust as part of an agreement tied to the production. Baldwin said going back to complete the movie was not easy. He explained that he was dealing with orthostatic hypotension, a condition that can cause major drops in blood pressure when standing up.
He said he felt so sick during filming that he spent more than a week in bed and needed therapy to help him recover. Recalling that period, Baldwin said, I had to get up on a horse and go back there to Montana to finish the film, or they were going to sue the s–t out of me.
Even though he has talked about retiring, Baldwin has not completely stepped away from the spotlight. He recently appeared in his family reality show, The Baldwins, which aired on TLC. He has also filmed a role in the crime thriller Kockroach with Taron Egerton and Chris Hemsworth.
Baldwin also remains involved in legal action of his own. Reports say he filed a civil lawsuit against New Mexico investigators and prosecutors, claiming he was unfairly targeted during the Rust case.
For now, Baldwin says what he wants most is peace, time at home, and life with his children. Whether he retires fully or not, it is clear his priorities have changed.
