Why Keanu Reeves Called One Movie a Long Horrible Story of Pain

Keanu Reeves has built a reputation as one of the most liked actors in Hollywood, but his career still includes a few projects that did not go well. Even his most loyal fans often point out that not every film in his filmography has landed with audiences or critics.

While he has had major success with franchises like John Wick and voice roles in films such as Toy Story 4 and the Sonic the Hedgehog series, some of his live-action projects in recent years have been less successful. Films like Matrix Resurrections, Siberia, and Replicas are often mentioned as examples of weaker entries in his career.

One of the most unusual stories linked to his past work involves the 2000 thriller The Watcher. Reeves has spoken about the project in past interviews, and his comments have been widely reported in entertainment media outlets.

He claimed that he did not originally agree to star in the film under normal circumstances. According to his account, he believed his signature was placed on a contract without his full consent by someone he once trusted in the industry. Faced with legal pressure and the possibility of a long dispute, he ended up taking part in the movie.

As production went on, his role reportedly became larger than what he had expected, even though he was not satisfied with the situation or the material. The experience left a strong impression on him, and he later described the situation in very direct terms.

In his words, “a long, horrible story of pain and woe, and of deception and deceit!” He also commented on his reaction to the script in a more informal way, saying, “I read the script, and yech! Sorry about that.”

These remarks have often been repeated in coverage of Reeves’ career as an example of how even established actors can end up in difficult productions that do not reflect their intentions or expectations.

Despite that difficult experience, Reeves has continued to maintain a steady career and strong public image. In recent years, he has been moving toward projects that allow him more creative flexibility and a mix of drama, comedy, and genre experimentation.

He recently starred in the dark comedy Outcome, which premiered on Apple TV on April 10. The film, directed by Jonah Hill, features Reeves as Reef Hawk, a Hollywood actor dealing with public controversy and personal challenges while trying to rebuild his reputation. The cast also includes Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer, and the film has been described as a self-aware look at celebrity culture.

Looking ahead, Reeves is also attached to upcoming projects, including the sci-fi thriller Shiver, currently scheduled for release in August 2027, and Constantine 2, which is in development. Both projects suggest a continued focus on genre storytelling, especially in action and supernatural themes.

Even with the setbacks earlier in his career, Reeves remains one of the most consistent figures in modern Hollywood, with a filmography that spans major blockbusters, cult films, and experimental roles.
