The first trailer for Coyote vs. Acme is finally here, giving audiences a look at a movie that almost disappeared before anyone could see it. The film had one of the most talked-about cancelation stories in recent Hollywood history.

The project was originally completed but later targeted by Warner Bros. for a major financial write-down in 2023. The plan was to shelve the movie instead of releasing it, which caused a strong reaction online. After the backlash, the film was saved when Ketchup Entertainment stepped in and picked it up for distribution.

Now, with its first trailer released, the film shows a very different kind of story for the classic cartoon character. Wile E. Coyote is no longer just chasing the Road Runner. Instead, he decides to take legal action against the Acme company, blaming them for years of failed and dangerous products.

He hires a lawyer, played by Will Forte, to take on the case. On the other side is a confident corporate lawyer played by John Cena. The film mixes live-action with animation and also includes other familiar Looney Tunes characters.

The trailer even points to the film’s troubled past with the line, “The Film Acme Didn’t Want You to See.” This directly references the earlier attempt to cancel the project.

The decision to scrap the movie was part of a larger strategy under Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav. Speaking to The New York Times, he explained the thinking behind such moves. “The question is, should we take certain of these movies and open them in the theater and spend another $30 or $40 million to promote them?” he said. “They were hard. But when I look at the health of our company today, we needed to make those decisions. And it took real courage.”

Will Forte also shared how surprised he was that the film survived. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “I never thought [the film would land distribution], so it just came out of nowhere, and I’m so thrilled. I’m so excited for people to see this movie.”

The film is directed by Dave Green and is based on a story inspired by a 1990 article from The New Yorker. It brings a fresh idea to a classic character by turning his usual failures into the center of a legal battle.

Coyote vs. Acme is set to arrive in theaters on August 28.

This movie already feels interesting because of everything that happened behind the scenes. The fact that it was almost canceled makes people more curious about it. It also shows how strong fan reactions can make a difference. What do you think about this film finally getting released? Share your thoughts in the comments.
