Henry Cavill’s ‘Highlander’ Reboot Begins Filming in Scotland — Karen Gillan Shares First Look Behind the Scenes
The long-awaited reboot of Highlander is officially filming in Scotland, and fans are finally getting a small behind-the-scenes look at the project.
According to production updates and posts shared online, the film is currently shooting across several Scottish locations, including dramatic landscapes and historic landmarks. One of the most notable spots featured is Eilean Donan Castle, which appears to be used as a key filming location.
The reboot stars Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod, taking on the role originally played by Christopher Lambert in the 1986 cult classic. The story follows immortal warriors who battle across centuries, a concept that fits perfectly with the film’s sweeping Scottish backdrop.
Co-star Karen Gillan has been sharing first-look images from set, giving fans a glimpse of costumes, scenery, and the production’s location work. In one post, she highlighted how meaningful it felt to film so close to home, describing it as a full-circle moment while working in her native Scotland.
Gillan plays Heather MacLeod in the film. Her posts also show wide landscape shots and aerial views that capture the tone the reboot is going for, with a heavy focus on atmosphere and real-world locations rather than studio sets.
The project is being directed by Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick franchise, which has raised expectations for the film’s action style. The original reboot has been in development for years, with multiple directors, writers, and actors attached at different stages before finally moving forward under Stahelski’s vision.
The cast also includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, and Marisa Abela, forming a large ensemble around Cavill’s lead role.
The film has had a long and complicated development history, with different versions planned over more than a decade. Earlier attempts included shifting directors, rewrites, and even casting changes before the current version finally moved into production.
Now that filming is underway, the project appears to be firmly back on track. While no trailer or release date has been confirmed yet, the first on-set glimpses from Scotland are giving fans their first real sign that the reboot is finally happening.
