‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Rides Onto Netflix in June as the First Sheridan Western to Cross the Streaming Divide

Taylor Sheridan has built one of the most dominant empires in modern television, and his universe of gritty, character-driven stories has long been the crown jewel of Paramount+. From the sweeping ranching drama ‘Yellowstone’ to the intense crime thriller ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, Sheridan’s work has consistently commanded massive audiences. But for years, his titles stayed firmly behind the Paramount+ paywall, with very few exceptions making their way to rival platforms.

That wall has been crumbling steadily throughout 2026, and the latest development is perhaps the most meaningful yet for fans who missed a particular chapter. The critically acclaimed Western drama ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ is officially bound for Netflix, set to arrive on the streamer beginning June 1st in the United States, the United Kingdom, and most international regions. The news was broken by What’s on Netflix, who described the arrival as a landmark moment tied to a broader new licensing arrangement between the two streaming giants.

According to What’s on Netflix, this makes ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ the first major title to be licensed as part of this new deal, lending it even greater significance beyond the series itself.

Netflix struck a licensing agreement with Paramount that encompasses roughly 20 Paramount TV shows coming to the megastreamer, with titles including ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, ‘SEAL Team’, and the CBS medical drama ‘Watson’ among those previously announced. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed the deal during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, stating that the partnership would bring shows to Netflix that the service had never previously carried around the world.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ was created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, with David Oyelowo starring as the legendary titular character. The series chronicles the true story of Bass Reeves, who rose from enslavement to become one of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals throughout his career without ever being wounded. The show premiered on Paramount+ in November 2023 and wrapped its eight-episode run the following December.

Despite earning a Critics’ Choice Award and Golden Globe nomination for Oyelowo, the series was never renewed for a second season. Its arrival on Netflix in June 2026 has sparked hope among fans that the show might gain a second life, and potentially inspire Paramount+ to reconsider a follow-up, though the path forward is complicated by Sheridan’s ongoing transition to NBCUniversal.

The actor himself had spoken passionately about his attachment to the project, telling Esquire that he had spent over eight years trying to get the story made, crediting Sheridan’s revival of the Western genre as a key inspiration for what ultimately became possible.

The precedent is encouraging for what a Netflix boost could mean. Earlier Paramount titles that made the jump, including the sci-fi drama ‘Halo’ and the teen supernatural series ‘School Spirits’, saw dramatic viewership surges after landing on the platform, with audiences discovering them in numbers that dwarfed their original debuts on Paramount+.

There is every reason to believe ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ is primed for a similar reception, given its rich historical story, powerhouse lead performance, and a supporting cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland in one of his final television roles, and Barry Pepper.
