Hulu has surprised fans of The Bear with a new episode that dropped without warning. The show, which has built a strong following since its release, continues to expand its story even while a final season is still being planned.

The Bear is a comedy-drama series created by Christopher Storer. It follows a group of people working in a Chicago restaurant and features Jeremy Allen White as Carmy Berzatto, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richie Jerimovich, Ayo Edebiri as Syd Adamu, and Jon Bernthal as Mikey Berzatto. The series has been one of Hulu’s most talked-about shows in recent years.

The fourth season was released in June 2025, and a fifth and final season is currently in development. Even so, Hulu has now released a surprise episode outside of the normal season schedule.

The episode is called “Gary.” It is a flashback story that focuses on Richie and Mikey during a work trip they take together to Gary, Indiana.

The episode explores their past relationship in more detail. It shows how their friendship worked before the main timeline of the series and gives more background on Mikey’s mental state. It also adds more context to Richie’s character, showing how he became the person fans meet in season one.

Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal wrote the episode together, while Christopher Storer directed it.

Moss-Bachrach announced the surprise episode on Instagram. In his post, he wrote, “COUSINS! PRIMOS! CUGINI!!! Get ready for GARY!!!! We are so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey. Written by me and @jonnybernthal. Directed by the one Christopher Storer. Making this was a dream come true. Thanks to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois. Search Gary in HULU to watch.”

All four seasons of The Bear are currently available to stream on Hulu. A release date for the final season has not been announced yet.

Alongside the main cast, the series also includes Lionel Boyce as Marcus, Liza Colón-Zayas as Tina, Abby Elliott as Natalie, Matty Matheson as Neil, and Edwin Lee Gibson as Ebraheim.
