The Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy brought a big goodbye for two long-time characters, Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt, played by Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd. The episode, and comments from showrunner Meg Marinis, were shared in an interview with Variety, which explained how the exit story came together.

The finale starts with chaos after a bridge collapse. Owen is on his way to the hospital when the accident happens. He survives and immediately goes into doctor mode. He helps save a family trapped in the wreckage. At first, no one can reach him. Teddy is left worried, especially after his abandoned truck is found underwater.

Teddy fears the worst and talks to Richard, played by James Pickens Jr., about a recent argument she had with Owen. She had been offered a job in Paris, and they disagreed about it. For a moment, she thinks she may have lost him forever.

Later, she spots a clue in the hospital. A keychain linked to Owen was used in an emergency medical procedure at the crash site. That small detail gives her hope that he is alive. Soon after, she finds him in surgery, working to save a patient.

Once the crisis is over, the two finally talk. In a quiet moment in the scrub room, Teddy tells Owen she will give up the Paris job because he is what feels like home to her. But Owen surprises her. He tells her to take the job, and says he and their children will go with her.

That decision becomes the emotional center of their exit. According to showrunner Meg Marinis in her interview with Variety, this ending was planned carefully. She said, “We wanted to tell this story that beautifully answered what Teddy had done at the end of last season. She was presented with an opportunity, and for once, Owen follows Teddy.”

Marinis also explained that both characters were always tied together in the story. Owen was introduced as a war surgeon dealing with trauma from losing his entire military unit. Teddy first came in as his close friend and later became deeply involved in his life and relationships inside the hospital.

Over many seasons, their story included marriages, breakups, children, and repeated attempts to find stability. Their relationship often changed, but they always ended up connected again. That long history is what led to their final decision to leave together.

The showrunner said the decision to write them out was not easy. She told Variety, “It was a super painful decision, from the bottom of my heart. I’m very close to both of those characters and those actors.” She also explained that the timing made sense for the story, even if it was hard personally for the team.

Marinis added that the choice was made early in the year after discussions about the direction of the show and the realities of television production. She said it is becoming harder to keep large casts on long-running network shows, especially after more than two decades on air.

She also spoke about how the exits were handled behind the scenes. Instead of telling both actors together, she spoke with them separately. She said this was important so each character could be treated as their own person, not just part of a couple leaving the show.

Even though Teddy and Owen are leaving Seattle, the ending is not tragic. It is framed as a fresh start. They decide to move their family to Paris, giving their story a hopeful ending instead of a sad one.

At the same time, the finale also includes a big moment for Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, but that storyline runs separately from Teddy and Owen’s goodbye.

Marinis confirmed that small details and callbacks were placed throughout the episode for long-time fans. She said many of these moments connect back to how the characters first joined the show and what they were originally looking for in life.

In simple terms, Owen was always searching for a place where he felt safe and connected after his military trauma. Teddy came to Seattle originally because of Owen, and over time her life became deeply tied to his.

Now, after years of ups and downs, the show brings their story to a close by letting them leave together instead of breaking apart.

This kind of ending fits Grey’s Anatomy well because it gives longtime characters closure without tragedy. It feels like the writers wanted to reward fans who have followed Owen and Teddy for years. What do you think about their exit and this ending for them? Share your thoughts in the comments.
