The Real Reason Gina Carano Was Axed From ‘The Mandalorian’ And How Her Disney Feud Finally Ended
Few exits from the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy have caused as much sustained noise as Gina Carano’s. The former MMA fighter turned actress was a fan favorite as Cara Dune, the rebel shock trooper turned marshal who became one of the most popular new faces of ‘The Mandalorian’ across its first two seasons.
Then in February 2021, she was suddenly gone from the galaxy far, far away. The fallout that followed stretched on for years and eventually pulled in Elon Musk, a federal lawsuit, and a settlement that almost no one in 2021 saw coming.
The Social Media Posts That Sparked Gina Carano’s Mandalorian Firing
The breaking point came when Carano shared an Instagram post comparing the experience of modern conservatives to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. She wrote that “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…. even by children,” and went on to argue that “the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews.” The hashtag #FireGinaCarano began trending almost immediately.
Lucasfilm cut ties within hours. A spokesperson confirmed that “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” adding that her social media posts “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Her talent agency UTA dropped her shortly after.
This was not an isolated incident. Carano had previously mocked mask wearing during the pandemic, suggested voter fraud occurred in the 2020 election, and ridiculed gender pronouns by listing “beep/bop/boop” in her bio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, an insider source claimed that Lucasfilm “have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw.”
The decision came with massive collateral damage to her career. Lucasfilm had reportedly planned to unveil Carano as the lead of her own Disney+ series, ‘Rangers of the New Republic’, during the December 2020 Investor Day before scrapping those plans entirely.
How Cara Dune Was Quietly Written Out Of The Mandalorian
Despite fan campaigns calling for a recast, Lucasfilm refused to bring Cara Dune back in any form. The studio confirmed that the character would not be recast, a decision that left her future in narrative limbo. Hasbro even cancelled the already announced Cara Dune action figure in the wake of the firing.
Online, fans threw out their own dream replacements. Lucy Lawless of the ‘Xena Warrior Princess’ fame became a particularly popular choice, and the actress later revealed she had actually been “in discussions about something” Star Wars adjacent, though she suspected the fan campaigns may have hurt her chances rather than helped.

When ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 finally arrived, the show addressed Cara Dune’s absence with a quick narrative workaround. The character was written out by being recruited into special forces, with executive producer Rick Famuyiwa noting that Jon Favreau took time to handle the situation in the creative. Viewer reactions split sharply between those mourning the lost arc and those happy to see the character quietly disappear.
For Cara Dune loyalists, the sting cut deeper because of how big she was meant to become. She had been introduced as a highly trained former Rebel shock trooper from Alderaan and was heavily promoted as a new star of the franchise before everything unraveled.
Gina Carano’s Lawsuit Against Disney And Lucasfilm
Three years after the firing, Carano fired back with legal force. In February 2024, she filed a lawsuit in California federal court against Disney and Lucasfilm, alleging discrimination and wrongful termination over her right-wing social media activity. Her complaint sought a court order to force Lucasfilm to recast her, plus at least 75,000 dollars and punitive damages.
The most surprising element of the suit was who funded it. Elon Musk’s X helped bankroll the case, with X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch stating the platform was “proud to provide financial support” to empower Carano to seek vindication of her free speech rights. Musk had previously promised to cover legal bills for users who said they were punished by employers because of platform activity.
In her own statement at the time, Carano said “Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob.” The legal fight quickly became a culture war flashpoint, drawing strong reactions from both her defenders and critics.
Carano further alleged she had suffered emotional damage and lost millions in income following the termination. The case kept her name in headlines and reignited a wider debate over how studios should handle employee speech online.
Where The Mandalorian Star Stands After The Settlement
The years long standoff finally ended in August 2025 with a mutual agreement. A Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement to Variety that “The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit,” adding that “Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff” and that the studio looked forward to “identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
The financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Carano herself reacted on X with a far softer note than her earlier fighting words. She wrote that the deal “is the best outcome for all parties involved” and added “I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”
She also thanked Musk, calling him “a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit.” In the years between the firing and the settlement, Carano had not been idle. She partnered with conservative outlet The Daily Wire to star in the Western thriller ‘Terror on the Prairie’, directed by Michael Polish, with Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing among the executive producers.
Whether her possible return through Disney’s hinted future opportunities actually materializes is now the great open question of this whole saga. After everything that has happened with Cara Dune, do you think Lucasfilm should genuinely bring her back into the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy, or has that chapter already closed for good?
