Tom Holland and Zendaya Reveal Their Funny Spider-Man Gaming Battles Ahead of ‘Brand New Day’
Tom Holland and Zendaya are bringing their real-life Spider-Man energy into their latest conversations, revealing that their biggest battles sometimes happen away from the movie set and in front of a gaming console.
While promoting their upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the actors opened up about their experiences playing Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel from Insomniac Games. During an interview with IGN Benelux, Holland praised the games, calling them “absolutely sensational,” while Zendaya admitted that she enjoys the stories but is not always confident when it comes to gameplay.
Zendaya explained that she prefers taking on challenges herself instead of accepting help, even when Holland tries to step in.
“I get very frustrated because I want to play all by myself and he’ll try to come just like, ‘Let me help you.’ And I’m like, ‘No! I need to do this on my own. You can’t help me,’” Zendaya said.
One moment that tested her patience came while playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Zendaya described struggling through a difficult fight while playing as MJ and refusing to hand over the controller until she had tried everything herself. Eventually, she accepted Holland’s help, but only after putting up a fight.
The story highlights how closely the couple connects with the Spider-Man world beyond their roles in the movies. Holland plays Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Zendaya portrays MJ, and their relationship has become one of the most popular parts of the recent Spider-Man films.
Their comments also show the impact Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have had on fans. Released in 2018, the first game was praised for capturing the feeling of actually being Spider-Man, from swinging through New York City to balancing Peter Parker’s personal struggles with his superhero responsibilities. Critics and players often highlighted the game’s emotional story, detailed open world, and fast-paced combat.
The sequel, Spider-Man 2, continued that success by expanding the world, adding new abilities, and introducing multiple playable characters. Many reviewers praised the performances, character development, and larger action scenes, while fans especially enjoyed how the game explored Peter Parker and Miles Morales as heroes with different experiences.
The popularity of the games has also influenced the Spider-Man movies. According to reports, the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day will show Peter Parker in a new chapter after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Doctor Strange’s spell, the world no longer remembers Peter, leaving him isolated and forced to continue as Spider-Man alone.
The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and brings back Holland and Zendaya alongside new and returning cast members, including Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. The story will reportedly focus on Peter becoming a more independent version of the hero, closer to the classic street-level Spider-Man fans know from the comics.
The connection between the games and the films has become clear over the years. Many fans have pointed out that Insomniac’s version of Peter Parker helped bring back the feeling of Spider-Man as a young hero dealing with everyday problems while fighting major threats.
With Brand New Day arriving in theaters on July 31 fans are excited to see whether the movie will capture some of the same energy that made the games such a success. For Holland and Zendaya, it seems the Spider-Man experience continues even when the cameras stop rolling, although Zendaya still wants the controller in her own hands.
