‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Star Anne Hathaway Teases New Details on ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ and Fans Are Listening
Anne Hathaway has given a new update on The Princess Diaries 3 while she is also busy promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway confirmed that the third Princess Diaries film is still being worked on, even though it is not ready to move into production yet.
She said, “One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it.” She explained that progress has not stopped, but other projects have slowed things down for now.
According to Hathaway, the attention around The Devil Wears Prada 2 has affected timing. She said the project “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” making it hard to focus on both films at once during filming schedules in 2025.
She added that the goal is still to make the next Princess Diaries movie after current commitments are finished, but she made it clear there is no official green light yet from the studio.
Hathaway said, “Everybody wants it,” and also confirmed that writing work is still happening in the background. She described the team as “chipping away at the script.”
She also spoke about the pressure of returning to beloved roles. She said, “If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”
Meryl Streep, who was with her during the interview, agreed and added, “You’ve got to wait for the right script.”
The idea of a third The Princess Diaries sequel has been discussed for years. It was first mentioned in 2016 after director Garry Marshall talked about plans before his passing, which paused development for a while.
Later updates over the years suggested the project was still alive in different forms, with Hathaway repeatedly saying she would return if the story was right. By 2024, she confirmed that discussions were in a better place, and Disney was still interested in moving forward.
Most recently, Hathaway also confirmed she will return as Mia, but no filming schedule has been announced yet.
For now, The Princess Diaries 3 remains in active development, but fans will have to wait for an official production start.
