A new story description for Star Wars: Starfighter has surfaced online, giving fans a better idea of what to expect from the next big movie in the galaxy far, far away.

According to IMDb, the film will follow “a solitary pilot” in a galaxy still rebuilding after major events from the past saga. The synopsis reads: “In a rebuilding galaxy, a solitary pilot becomes entangled in a crucial mission as new threats emerge. Their journey may alter the future of the Force itself.”

The movie is set around five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and will focus mostly on brand-new characters. Ryan Gosling is leading the cast, with Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Flynn Gray, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings also starring in the project.

Shawn Levy is directing the film after years of trying to develop his own Star Wars project with Lucasfilm. Levy previously worked on Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reportedly wanted him to bring his own style and tone into the franchise. Jonathan Tropper, who worked with Levy before, wrote the screenplay.

Development on the movie first started back in 2022, although production slowed down because of the 2023 writers strike. Things picked back up afterward, and filming officially began in the United Kingdom in 2025. Parts of the movie were also filmed in Sardinia, Italy, before production wrapped later that year.

The film is being described as a standalone story instead of the beginning of another trilogy. However, Lucasfilm has said that some sequel-era characters could still appear. Rumors previously suggested Daisy Ridley’s Rey might return in some form, although nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled to release in theaters on May 28, 2027.
