A new trailer has been released for the animated fantasy film Another World, a movie that first started as a short project before becoming a major international success.

The information comes from GKIDS, the North American distributor handling the film’s release, along with details shared from festival and award reports.

Another World is the feature directorial debut of Tommy Ng Kai Chung. It originally began as a 14-minute short film that gained attention at international festivals in 2019. That early success helped the team secure funding to turn it into a full-length movie.

The film is based on the novel Sennenki by Naka Saijo. It went on to win Best Animated Feature at the Golden Horse Awards, one of the most important awards in Chinese-language cinema. It also became the highest-earning animated film in Hong Kong history.

The new trailer does not follow a clear story in a simple way. Instead, it focuses on mood and visuals. It shows a girl and a masked spirit moving through a strange and otherworldly space filled with beauty, sadness, and danger.

GKIDS has shared a clearer description of the story. It follows Gudo, a spirit known as a Soul Keeper, who guides human souls into their next life. He meets a young girl named Yuri, who died too soon and is now trapped with strong feelings of anger and regret. As her soul becomes unstable, Gudo tries to stop her from causing harm to both the human world and the spirit world.

The official description says, “Another World is a dark fairytale that explores forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of hatred and despair.”

The film was made through a global collaboration, with artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, France, and the Philippines working together. It will be shown in North American cinemas starting June 5, with screenings in Cantonese and English subtitles.

GKIDS has not shared any details yet about a streaming or home release date.
