‘Outlander’ Filmed Multiple Endings as Sam Heughan Reveals He Doesn’t Know the Final Cut
Outlander is heading into its final season, and things are being kept more secret than ever before. The show, which is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, is now in its eighth and last season. According to cast members, even the actors did not fully know how the story would end while filming.
The series stars Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser. Both actors revealed that the production team made a big change in how the final season was filmed. Instead of one clear ending, the crew shot multiple versions of the final scenes.
Sam Heughan explained this during a set visit interview, saying, “We’re going to shoot various endings. I don’t know which one they’ll use.” His comments show that even he was unsure which version would be chosen for the final episode.
Caitríona Balfe also spoke about how unusual the process was for the cast. She said the showrunner Matthew B. Roberts kept everything very secret during filming. She explained, “Our showrunner Matt Robert is keeping everything so close to his chest. I’m worried about what we’re going to be doing. I am such control freak. I like to know, and we don’t know, and it’s driving me crazy.” She added that the team was working step by step instead of seeing the full season plan like before.
This approach is different from how Outlander normally works. In earlier seasons, the actors usually had a clear idea of the story and episode structure. This time, they were often filming without knowing the full direction of the story. The report comes from on-set interviews and press coverage during filming in Scotland.

The reason for filming multiple endings is likely to keep the final story secret. Outlander has a very passionate fanbase, and spoilers often spread quickly online. By shooting different versions, the production reduces the chance of the real ending leaking before release.
This method is not completely new for the franchise. The spin-off Outlander: Blood of My Blood also reportedly used multiple fake endings during its production, with some actors not knowing which version was final until later.
Sam Heughan later confirmed the situation again during an appearance on a talk show. He said, “I actually don’t know the ending. We shot multiple endings, I was there, but I don’t know how it ends. I’ll be watching with you all.”
The final season is building a lot of curiosity because the story of Claire and Jamie is coming to an end, but the original books by Diana Gabaldon are still not finished. That has made fans even more unsure about how the show will wrap everything up.
For now, even the main actors are waiting like the audience. They will only find out the real ending when the final episode airs.
