Why ‘True Detective’ Star Matthew McConaughey Spent 22 Days in Peru Living Off-Grid as “Mateo”
Matthew McConaughey has shared a story about a period early in his career when he stepped away from Hollywood and lived in Peru for 22 days with no electricity. The actor discussed the experience on the “No Magic Pill” podcast.
McConaughey said the break happened during a time when early fame was starting to feel overwhelming. To disconnect from his public image, he left the United States and went to Peru, where he lived off-grid and used a different name, Mateo, to avoid attention and separate himself from his celebrity identity.
He explained that the goal was to reset his sense of self and understand what parts of his life felt real. “I needed to get my feet on the ground,” McConaughey said. “So I click out. Boom. Go to Peru. I needed to find it, to check the validation. I knew I had it, I just had to go prove it again. But I did question, now that I just got famous, I’ve got all this affiliation for this and that and the other. And I’m trying to decipher which part’s real, which part’s bullshit.”
During the trip, McConaughey said the first part of the experience felt difficult and uncertain. He described those early days as “wonky,” but said things changed once he had been there long enough to settle into the routine of daily life without fame or comfort. He said that moment gave him clarity about his identity and his ability to live outside of Hollywood pressure.
As the experience continued, he began to feel more grounded. He explained that reaching a point where he felt comfortable living that way helped him realize he could always return home if he chose to. It was less about escaping permanently and more about proving to himself that he could exist without fame defining him.
McConaughey also said the people he met in Peru only knew him as Mateo, not as a celebrity. He said that made the experience more meaningful because it removed the expectations attached to his public image. “I needed to meet people who knew me as Mateo,” he said. “And at the end of 22 days, the tears in their eyes and the tears in my eyes and the hugs we had on the sadness and happiness of saying goodbye were all based off of the man they met named Mateo, who had nothing to do with the celebrity. It reaffirmed my own identity that, ‘Oh, I still got it. This is based on me.’”
The Peru trip happened during the early stage of McConaughey’s rise to fame. He later stepped away from Hollywood again by moving his family to Texas after growing frustrated with being typecast in romantic comedies following major roles in films like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
