Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ has been reinterpreted on screen more times than most classic stories can claim, from Disney’s animated segment featuring a Bing Crosby song to Tim Burton’s gothic detective spin starring Johnny Depp.

Two centuries after its original publication, the tale of a headless horseman terrorizing a superstitious schoolteacher is getting yet another makeover, and this one is putting a very different character in the spotlight.

Sydney Sweeney is attached to lead ‘Hollow’, a new film reimagining of Irving’s 1820 short story that Sony Pictures has now officially set into motion. Rather than following Ichabod Crane’s perspective as most adaptations traditionally do, this version flips the entire narrative structure around a character who has historically been treated as little more than a prize to be won.

That character is Katrina Van Tassel, the wealthy farmer’s daughter caught between the affections of Ichabod Crane and his rival Brom Bones in Irving’s original tale. In this retelling, Van Tassel becomes the central figure of the story herself, positioned at the heart of what has been described as a dangerous mystery and a seductive supernatural love triangle rather than remaining a passive object of romantic pursuit.

The project comes from Lindsey Anderson Beer, who is adapting her own upcoming debut novel of the same name for the screen while also directing. Beer, best known for writing and directing 2023’s ‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’, is described as blending gothic atmosphere, psychological intrigue, and erotic thriller elements into what is being pitched as a contemporary, high concept reinvention of the classic tale.

Beer’s novel has already generated serious industry buzz before it even hits shelves. Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House known for launching more bestsellers than any other publishing house, made a preemptive acquisition to take the book off the market before it could go to auction, with the story of Katrina Van Tassel scheduled for publication in the fall of 2027.

Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is producing the film alongside Beer through her Brew Lab banner. Sweeney is also attached as a producer through her newly launched Honey Trap company, marking the label’s first official film project since its formation, with Kaylee McGregor serving as president of production and development.

This is not Sweeney’s first trip into horror territory, following her role in ‘Immaculate’ and setting up a busy stretch that also includes a sequel to ‘The Housemaid’ and her upcoming blockbuster debut in a ‘Gundam’ film. Casting for the rest of ‘Hollow’ is reportedly already underway, with the roles of Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones said to be in high demand among actors eager to join the project.

No release date has been set for the film yet, and with the source novel itself still more than a year away from publication, ‘Hollow’ remains in the earlier stages of development. Still, the concept alone has generated plenty of excitement among horror fans eager to see one of literature’s more overlooked heroines finally take center stage in her own story.
