James Franco is stepping back into a major Hollywood franchise with a new role in the upcoming “John Rambo” prequel. The news was first reported by Variety, which states that Franco will play a small villain role in the film.

The project is currently in post-production after wrapping filming in Thailand. It is directed by Jalmari Helander, known for “Sisu,” and serves as an origin story set before the events of the 1982 film “First Blood,” which introduced Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character Rambo.

According to Variety, Franco joins a growing cast that includes Noah Centineo as a younger version of Rambo and David Harbour as Major Trautman, Rambo’s commanding officer. The film is building out the early history of the character before he became the lone warrior audiences know from the original franchise.

The cast also includes Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong. The film is produced by Lionsgate, Millennium Media, Templeton Media, and AGBO, with distribution handled by Lionsgate.

Franco’s casting comes at a time when he has been making more public appearances again, including at the Cannes Film Festival. He was seen attending the opening ceremony with his partner Izabel Pakzad and later appeared at several festival events, including a Chopard dinner and the “Club Kid” party.

During Cannes, Franco spoke to Deadline and suggested he had recently finished work on another unnamed major studio film. He said, “it won’t be ready for this summer, but my guess is it will be end of this year or spring-summer 2027.” He also described focusing on rebuilding his personal life, saying he has been working on living a “positive life” after past controversies.

Franco was previously accused of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior at his acting school. He denied some of the allegations but acknowledged concerns raised by multiple accusers.

The screenplay for “John Rambo” is written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. The production team includes Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot, and Michael Disco, along with executive producers Anthony and Joe Russo and Sylvester Stallone.

The film is expected to expand the early mythology of Rambo, showing how the character became involved in military operations before the events of the original movie.

With production already completed and the cast in place, the project is now moving through post-production ahead of its release.
