Michael Fassbender Gets Laughs at Cannes With Bizarre Alien Joke
Michael Fassbender made a light and unusual comment about aliens during his appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, where his new film Hope was shown to audiences.
The information comes from coverage of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where the movie premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or. The film screening took place on May 17, and it quickly drew a strong reaction from the audience, including a long standing ovation that lasted about six minutes.
During the event, Fassbender spoke about the idea behind the film and used humor while talking about aliens. He suggested that humans and aliens might not be so different after all. He said, “Aliens are living amongst us.”
He also added a more thoughtful point about the story and what it means in a broader sense. He explained, “Hopefully, we could learn something from them, hopefully they wouldn’t be aggressive … I think in our case, what’s interesting about the aliens [in the movie Hope] and what would be sort of comparable to humans is they want the same things, which is just protecting their young and it’s sort of all down to that.”
The film Hope is directed by Na Hong-jin and is described as a science fiction action thriller set in a remote coastal village in South Korea. The story begins with what looks like a local wildlife situation involving a possible tiger sighting. However, things quickly turn into something much more dangerous when a larger, unknown force appears.
In the story, wildfires cut off communication, and the village becomes isolated. The local police and residents are forced to deal with a growing threat that turns into an alien-related crisis. The situation pushes the characters into survival mode as they try to understand what is happening and protect their community.
The cast includes a mix of international actors such as Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender plays a character named Ma’veyyo, part of the mysterious group connected to the alien presence in the story.
The film’s official description explains that it takes place in a village near the Demilitarized Zone and follows a police chief and a rookie officer as they try to defend their town after communication lines are destroyed. A separate group of hunters also becomes involved in the danger deep in the mountains, where something unknown is hunting them as well.
According to the festival coverage, the movie received a strong reaction from the Cannes audience, with viewers responding enthusiastically after the screening. The standing ovation was described as a major moment for the cast and crew, especially for Fassbender, who appeared visibly moved by the response.
The film Hope is scheduled for a summer 2026 release in South Korea. It is also competing at Cannes, where it is part of the main selection for one of the festival’s top awards.
The combination of science fiction themes, survival storytelling, and international casting has made the movie one of the more talked-about premieres at the festival. Fassbender’s casual comments about aliens added a lighter moment to an otherwise intense and serious event.
