Javier Bardem Sparks Debate at Cannes After Linking Toxic Masculinity to Trump, Putin and Netanyahu
Javier Bardem didn’t hold back while speaking at the Cannes Film Festival. The Oscar-winning actor spoke about toxic masculinity, world leaders, and the war in Gaza during a press conference for his new movie “The Beloved.” His comments quickly grabbed attention online after he directly mentioned Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Benjamin Netanyahu while talking about powerful men and violence.
According to Variety, Bardem said the problem of toxic masculinity goes far beyond everyday life and can also be seen in politics and global conflicts. While discussing violence against women in Spain, he became emotional about how normalized it has become.
“There is an average of two women killed monthly by their ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends or ex husbands. Which is horrible,” Bardem said during the press conference. “Are we fucking nuts? We’re killing women because some men think they own them?”
From there, the actor connected the issue to world leaders and the way power is often displayed through aggression and war. Bardem specifically called out Trump, Putin, and Netanyahu while describing what he sees as dangerous male behavior tied to power and dominance.
“And that problem also goes to Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin and Mr. Netanyahu, those big-balls men saying, ‘My cock is bigger than yours and I’m going to bomb the shit out of you,’” Bardem said. “It’s a fucking male toxic behavior.”
The actor also spoke about Gaza and said he believes more people in Hollywood are starting to speak openly about the conflict. Bardem has been one of the most vocal actors on the topic over the past few years. Earlier this year at the Oscars, he publicly said “Free Palestine” while presenting an award.
At Cannes, Bardem admitted that speaking out can still be scary, but he feels it’s necessary.
“The fear does exist, granted, but one has to do things even if you feel a bit scared or afraid,” he explained. “You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror.”
He also claimed that younger generations are pushing people to pay closer attention to what’s happening around the world because information spreads instantly online.
“Everyone is beginning to realize this is unacceptable,” Bardem said while discussing Gaza. “There can be no reason, no explanation for this genocide.”
The actor also criticized media monopolies and growing corporate control in entertainment and news. He mentioned the increasing influence of major companies and social media platforms, saying it worries him how quickly people consume information without fully understanding it.
Despite the controversy his comments may cause, Bardem made it clear he has no plans to stop speaking publicly about issues he cares about. In a recent interview with Variety, he explained why he continues to use his platform.
“I’ve always felt that I have microphones and recorders recording my voice, and I have the right to denounce what I think is wrong,” he said.
Bardem is currently at Cannes promoting “The Beloved,” directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. The film received a seven-minute standing ovation after its premiere.
