‘Masters of the Universe’ First Reactions Drop After Star-Studded Premiere in LA
The world of Eternia has officially made its way to Hollywood, as “Masters of the Universe” held its world premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday night. The long-awaited live-action reboot brought its cast, crew, and early audience reactions together for the first public screening of the film ahead of its theatrical release on June 5.
Directed by Travis Knight, the film is based on the classic Mattel franchise and follows Prince Adam of Eternia, who is sent to Earth as a child after losing his connection to the Sword of Power. Raised under the name Adam Glenn, he grows up as an ordinary man before fate brings him back to his destiny. Once reunited with the sword, he returns to Eternia to face destruction and confront his greatest enemy, Skeletor.
The premiere drew attention not only because of the franchise’s legacy but also because of its star-studded cast. Nicholas Galitzine takes on the role of Prince Adam / He-Man, while Jared Leto plays the villain Skeletor. Idris Elba appears as Man-at-Arms, Camila Mendes plays Teela, Alison Brie takes on Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin plays the Sorceress, and Kristen Wiig voices Roboto.
The ensemble also includes Eire Farrell as young Teela, James Purefoy as King Randor, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm / Fisto, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena Glenn, Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, and Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man.
After the screening, early reactions from attendees were shared online since official critic reviews are still under embargo until closer to release. Amazon MGM Studios allowed guests at the premiere to post brief impressions on social media, giving fans their first glimpse of how the film is being received.
The story of “Masters of the Universe” has a long history in entertainment. It began as a Mattel toy line in 1982, followed by the animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” in 1983. A previous live-action film was released in 1987 starring Dolph Lundgren, but it failed to perform well at the box office. Since then, multiple attempts to reboot the franchise were developed before Amazon MGM Studios secured the rights in 2024.
The new film had a lengthy development process, passing through several studios, directors, and cast changes before finally reaching production. Filming took place in London between January and June 2025.
With the premiere now complete, audience reactions are beginning to shape early expectations ahead of the film’s global release. The full critical response is expected to follow in the coming weeks.
