ABC’s The Rookie has closed out its eighth season with a major ratings boost, proving once again that the long-running police drama is still going strong with viewers. According to Nielsen National Live+7 Day Big Data Plus Panel ratings, the Season 8 finale brought in 9.25 million total viewers across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and other digital platforms.

The finale aired on May 4 and delivered a dramatic conclusion that included a long-awaited “Chenford” proposal and a major twist that kept audiences talking. The episode not only wrapped up the season but also helped the show grow its audience compared to the previous year.

Compared to the Season 7 finale, which drew 8.93 million viewers in 2025, the latest episode saw a 4% increase in total viewership. That growth also marked a strong finish to a three-week streak of rising numbers, making it the series’ most-watched episode in more than three months.

According to the same Nielsen data, the finale also hit a season-high rating among adults aged 18–49, scoring a 2.1. This demographic performance is especially important for broadcast television, showing that the series continues to attract younger viewers as well as long-time fans.

The source of the data, Nielsen ratings, also confirmed that The Rookie has maintained steady growth over multiple seasons. The 2025–26 season marked the fourth consecutive year the series has increased both total viewers and key demographic ratings. Over the past few years, its audience has grown significantly across both linear TV and streaming platforms.

Earlier in the season, the premiere episode also performed strongly, reaching 9.35 million viewers and setting a new streaming high for a season opener in over six years. That momentum carried through the rest of the season, with consistent engagement across platforms like Hulu and Disney+ helping to boost overall numbers.

The show, which stars Nathan Fillion, has also found a strong following among younger audiences. Nielsen’s multi-platform tracking shows it ranks as the No. 1 broadcast drama among adults 18–34 and also performs strongly with teens aged 12–17. A big part of its recent popularity has come from viral moments on social media platforms like TikTok, which have helped introduce the series to new viewers.

Beyond the finale’s success, ABC has already confirmed that The Rookie will return for Season 9 in 2027. A new spinoff titled The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis, has also been ordered, expanding the franchise further.

With steady growth in ratings, strong streaming numbers, and continued social media buzz, The Rookie remains one of ABC’s most reliable drama hits even eight seasons in.
