A film adaptation of the long-running mystery-adventure video game series Broken Sword is now officially in development.

According to a report from Variety, the project is being developed by Revolution Software, production company Story Kitchen, and writer Evan Spiliotopoulos, who previously worked on Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast.

The Broken Sword franchise was created by Charles Cecil and first launched in 1996 with The Shadow of the Templars. The games follow American tourist George Stobbart and French journalist Nicole Collard as they get pulled into global conspiracies tied to ancient secrets and religious history. Over the years, the series has become known for its strong storytelling and puzzle-driven gameplay set across European locations.

The franchise has been active for nearly three decades and has reached more than 10 million players worldwide. It is also seen as one of the early examples that helped shape modern narrative-focused video games. In recent years, the series has continued to find new life, including a successful Kickstarter campaign for a remake project titled Smoking Mirror Reforged, which raised close to $1 million.

The upcoming film will be written by Evan Spiliotopoulos. His past work includes The Unholy, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Snake Eyes. The story is expected to bring the game’s mix of mystery, history, and globe-spanning adventure to a wider audience in a live-action format.

Production is being handled by Story Kitchen, a company that has been actively building film and TV adaptations of popular games. Their upcoming projects include work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and Amazon’s Life Is Strange series. They are producing the Broken Sword movie alongside Charles Cecil and Noirin Carmody from Revolution Software.

Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg said in a joint statement that the goal is to stay true to the spirit of the original games. They said, “Very few franchises of this era have stayed relevant, premium, and loyal to the intelligence of their audience. ‘Broken Sword’ has done all three. Our work here isn’t to adapt a game into a film. It’s to move a world that has been building for three decades into the next medium it deserves, working hand-in-hand with the people who built it.”

Charles Cecil also spoke about the collaboration and praised the creative approach of the team. He said, “Story Kitchen came to this project with a deep passion for the IP. That’s rare. The creative conversations have been about translating what ‘Broken Sword’ is, rather than what it can be made to look like. I am hugely excited to be working with Story Kitchen and Evan.”

The film is still in early development, and no release date has been announced yet.
