A new mockbuster has appeared ahead of the upcoming release of Masters of the Universe.

Master of the Universe is the newest project from The Asylum, a studio known for producing low-budget films that closely mirror major Hollywood releases. This time, the film arrives just before the big-screen reboot of Masters of the Universe, which is set for a theatrical release in June.

The Asylum has a long history of releasing similar “mockbuster” titles that echo popular blockbuster films. Over the years, the studio has produced many films inspired by major franchises, often releasing them around the same time as the original movies to attract attention from curious viewers.

This new film follows that same pattern. It is scheduled for a digital release on May 22, just a few days before the major studio version of Masters of the Universe hits cinemas.

The story of Master of the Universe follows a young man who discovers hidden powers inside himself. He is forced to use these abilities when an alien enemy arrives on Earth with an army, planning to take control of the planet and then the entire universe.

The film is directed by Marcel Walz, who previously worked on Shark Trash. The screenplay is written by Marc Gottlieb, known for The Last Hail M.A.R.Y.. The cast includes Matthew Gademske, Morgan Flanagan, Jay F. Krymis, Antonio Valles, and Telisha Johnson.

According to production details shared with the trailer release, the movie continues The Asylum’s style of low-budget science fiction and fantasy storytelling. The company has built a reputation for producing quick-turnaround films that often mirror larger Hollywood blockbusters in theme and timing.

Masters of the Universe is the major studio film that this release is clearly positioned alongside. That version is a high-budget live-action adaptation of the classic toy line and animated series, and it is expected to be one of the bigger fantasy releases of the year.

The Asylum’s version, however, takes a more simplified approach, focusing on a basic hero story involving alien invasion and hidden powers. While the plots are not directly connected, the timing of the release makes the comparison unavoidable.

The trailer for Master of the Universe has already been released, giving audiences a first look at the film’s tone and visual style. It shows a straightforward science fiction action story with a focus on survival and power awakening.

At this stage, very little additional information has been shared about the project beyond the basic plot and cast list. The studio is expected to reveal more details closer to the release date.

With the film arriving just days before the major studio blockbuster, it is already drawing attention from fans of both fantasy films and The Asylum’s long-running mockbuster tradition.
