The director of the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot has explained why Jared Leto’s version of Skeletor will feel different from earlier versions of the character.

Travis Knight said the goal was not to copy what came before, but to build something new while still respecting the original idea of the character. He explained that Skeletor has always been a mix of different tones, not just one simple style.

Knight said, “Skeletor for me was one of the most iconic villains of the ’80s and it was because there were a variety of factors. I think most villains at that time, they looked cool or they were scary or they were funny or they were intimidating. Skeletor was all of those things, so it’s just a really interesting combination of flavors.”

He also talked about the original voice of Skeletor, which was created by Alan Oppenheimer in the classic animated series. That version used a more playful and nasal tone to balance out the character’s scary design. Knight said this was done on purpose so the character would not be too frightening for kids watching the show.

For the new film, Knight worked with Jared Leto to create a different version of the voice and personality. He made it clear that the goal was not imitation. He said, “So, when I was speaking with Jared, we recognized that we wanted to honor all those aspects, including a distinctive voice and an interesting laugh, but we did not want to engage in mimicry.”

He added that they spent a lot of time testing different ideas to figure out how the character should sound. According to him, the focus was on finding a voice that fits the new tone of the movie while still keeping the spirit of Skeletor.

Knight also described this version of Skeletor as a character with both danger and performance built into him. He said, “Ultimately, we arrived at this, which I love because I think it has menace, it has theatricality, which is always a part of Skeletor.”

He explained that Skeletor is not just a villain who wants power, but also someone who acts like he is always performing. He said the character is insecure and reacts strongly when he does not get the reaction he expects from others.

Knight said, “Ultimately, he’s a very insecure man and that becomes a part of his character. He’s a power-hungry man who’s deeply insecure and that was a fun thing to dive into and figure out how we could dramatize that character.”

The director also said the new version of Skeletor should feel entertaining as well as threatening. He described the balance as important for the film’s tone, saying the character should be fun to watch while still feeling dangerous.

The reboot of Masters of the Universe is set to bring the classic fantasy story back to the big screen with a new cast and modern approach. Jared Leto plays Skeletor, continuing his career in major film roles across drama, action, and fantasy projects.

The movie is scheduled for release on June 5th and early reports suggest it is one of the more closely watched fantasy releases of the year.
