Michael Bay is set to return to big action filmmaking with a new movie based on a real-life U.S. rescue mission in Iran, according to confirmation from Universal Pictures on Wednesday.

The project will be directed by Bay and is titled Operation Epic Fury. It focuses on the rescue of two American pilots who were shot down during the April 2026 conflict in Iran. The incident happened during what is described as a large-scale military operation involving the United States, and the story follows the effort to recover the pilots after their F-15E Strike Eagle was brought down over the Zagros Mountains.

The film is based on a yet-to-be-published book by Mitchell Zuckoff, which is scheduled for release in 2027 through HarperCollins. The story presents the rescue mission as one of the most complex and large-scale recovery efforts in U.S. military history.

According to Universal Pictures, the project is being developed as a true-story action film. The rescue operation itself, referred to in reports as Operation Epic Fury, is described as taking place under dangerous conditions in mountainous terrain, where teams worked to extract the downed pilots after the crash.

This film also brings Bay back together with several long-time collaborators. Mitchell Zuckoff previously wrote 13 Hours, which Bay adapted into 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. That connection signals a return to the same type of military-based storytelling that Bay has worked on before.

Bay is also reuniting with producers Erwin Stoff and Scott Gardenhour. Both worked with him on 13 Hours, while Gardenhour has also been involved in earlier Bay films like Armageddon and Pain & Gain. All three will produce Operation Epic Fury together.

The announcement comes after a quieter stretch for Bay in terms of narrative feature films. His last theatrical movie was Ambulance in 2022, a fast-paced action thriller set around a bank robbery and ambulance chase in Los Angeles. Since then, Bay has mostly focused on documentary work, including We Are Storror, released in 2025, which followed a group of British parkour athletes.

Universal Pictures has not yet announced a release date for Operation Epic Fury, and casting details have also not been revealed.

The film is expected to continue Bay’s focus on large-scale action, military tension, and real-world inspired events, similar to his previous work based on true operations and high-risk missions.
