“House of the Dragon” creator Ryan Condal spoke openly about the backlash and toxic behavior that surrounded parts of the fandom, especially the way some viewers compared and separated the younger cast members from the adult versions of their characters.

Condal said the situation was painful to watch, especially for the actors involved. He described the online reaction as part of a wider problem in fan culture, where discussions often turn aggressive instead of supportive. He said, “It’s an unfortunate by-product of the internet rage machine — we have so turned against ourselves in fandom.”

He explained that fandom used to feel like a shared space where people could enjoy the same story in different ways. Instead, he believes it has shifted into something more divided and hostile. Condal said, “This kind of fandom used to be the happy place to go, where people who liked different things within the same world could just find common ground.”

The biggest issue he pointed out was how younger breakout stars from Season 1 were sometimes compared negatively to the adult actors who later took over the roles after the time jump in the story. He called this behavior harmful and unnecessary, especially because both sets of actors were working on the same characters in different parts of their lives.

Condal did not hold back his frustration about the situation. He said, “And I thought it was horrible! And it’s horrible for all these young performers that did a great thing, and kind of did an impossible thing. Everybody should have just been celebrating the success and reception of that show. And people should find something else to do with their time, frankly.”

The comments reflect a larger discussion around “House of the Dragon” fandom activity, which became especially intense after Season 2. The second season faced heavy criticism for its slower pacing and storytelling choices. Many viewers expected a faster-moving war story after the explosive Season 1 finale, but instead got a season focused more on dialogue, character development, and political tension.

Some fans also reacted strongly to changes from the original source material. Certain plot adjustments and character motivations were widely debated online, leading to arguments between viewers who had read the book and those watching the show without prior knowledge of the story.

At the same time, HBO’s marketing campaign encouraged fans to pick sides between “Team Black” and “Team Green,” which increased engagement but also intensified division within the audience. What started as fun debate turned into more aggressive online arguments as expectations for Season 2 built up over time.

By the end of the season, frustration from some viewers grew, especially over what they saw as a slow buildup to events that had already been delayed. This frustration often spilled over onto social media, where cast members and writers were sometimes targeted directly.

Condal’s comments highlight how that environment affected the people involved in the production. While he acknowledged criticism of the show itself, he was more focused on how that criticism turned personal and affected younger actors who were simply performing roles in a complex, large-scale story.

Despite the backlash, “House of the Dragon” remains one of HBO’s most high-profile series, with future seasons still expected to continue the Targaryen civil war story. Condal’s remarks suggest that while creative debates are expected in a major franchise, he hopes the focus can shift back toward appreciation rather than division.
