The Dutton Ranch team has addressed the sudden exit of the show’s original creator and showrunner Chad Feehan just before the series premiere.

The news came out ahead of the show’s May 15 debut, when it was confirmed that Feehan would not continue if the series is renewed for a second season. The situation quickly drew attention because it happened so close to the launch of one of the most anticipated projects in the Yellowstone universe.

Producer Christina Alexandra Voros, who also directed the first two episodes of the series, spoke about the situation in an interview with ScreenRant. She kept her comments focused on the work Feehan had already done on season one and avoided discussing any behind-the-scenes conflict.

She said, “I think Chad did an exceptional job building a world of adversaries for Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) to come up against in this new chapter of their lives.”

She added that she was not involved in any decisions about a possible second season and did not comment on future plans for the show. She also expressed appreciation for Feehan’s contribution to building the foundation of the series.

She said, “Any speculation about a season 2 is beyond my knowledge. And I’m grateful to him and his team for creating a world for these characters to move into.”

The series centers on Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, two of the most popular characters from the original Yellowstone. Their relationship and shared history have been a major part of the franchise’s success, and this new spinoff continues their story in a new setting.

Reports from Puck, which first broke the news of Feehan’s departure, claimed that tensions existed during production. According to those reports, there were creative disagreements on set involving Feehan and the show’s lead actors, Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, both of whom also serve as executive producers on the series.

Those reports also suggested that Taylor Sheridan, who oversees the wider Yellowstone universe, was not fully satisfied with how season one developed under Feehan’s leadership. Feehan had previously worked with Sheridan on other projects, including the series Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

Even with the behind-the-scenes changes, the show is still moving forward as one of the key expansions of the Yellowstone franchise. The production continues Sheridan’s approach of building a large television universe with interconnected stories and returning characters.

The cast also includes well-known actors such as Annette Bening and Ed Harris, who join Hauser and Reilly in the new chapter of the story. Their addition has helped build interest in the series as it launches into a competitive television landscape.

The situation around Feehan’s exit has added extra attention to the show’s debut, but production sources have not indicated any changes to the already released episodes. For now, the focus remains on the characters and how Rip and Beth continue their story inside the expanding world of Yellowstone.
