Netflix’s new series The Boroughs is already getting a lot of attention online, mostly because of its strong connection to the creators of Stranger Things. The show comes from the Duffer Brothers’ production company Upside Down Pictures and has quickly become a talking point among fans who are trying to figure out if it secretly connects to their biggest hit.

The Boroughs is set in a quiet retirement community in New Mexico. On the surface, it looks like a peaceful place filled with golf carts, friendly neighbors, and calm daily life. But things quickly change when a group of elderly residents discovers a dangerous alien threat hiding underneath the town.

The series stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard, and early reviews have been very positive, with a 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes reported by critics.

Even though the story is new, many viewers say it feels familiar. Some fans have even started calling it “Stranger Things with retirees” because of its group dynamic and its mix of friendship and sci-fi danger. The comparison has grown stronger as more episodes have been released.

A big part of the conversation started on Reddit, where one viewer pointed out a possible hidden visual detail. In episode four, there is a shot of mountains in the distance. According to the fan, when the image is flipped upside down, the shape looks similar to Vecna’s cave and Max’s mental escape space from Stranger Things. The user also mentioned that the production company name, Upside Down Pictures, made the moment feel intentional.

Despite the fan theories, the creators of The Boroughs have been clear about one thing. The show is not set in the Stranger Things universe. In an interview with Polygon, co-creator Jeffrey Addis said, “I want to be so clear that this is not at all the case. If you like Stranger Things, we hope you’ll like our show, but it is not in any way in the Stranger Things universe. It is separate.”

Co-creator Will Matthews also spoke about the online theories. He admitted that while they are not true, they are still interesting ideas. He said, “It’s not true, but it is a good idea.”

Matt Duffer has also commented on the similarities between the two shows. He explained that both stories focus on a group of outsiders facing strange and dangerous forces. He said, “The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it is also about a group of outsiders dealing with an otherworldly threat.” He added that the main difference is that the characters are older and move around in golf carts instead of bikes.

Even with all the clarification, the discussion has not slowed down. Many fans believe the creative overlap between the two shows is too strong to ignore. Others think it is simply a case of the same creative team exploring similar ideas in a new setting.

What is clear is that The Boroughs has managed to grab attention fast. Whether viewers see it as a fresh sci-fi story or a spiritual cousin to Stranger Things, it has already become one of Netflix’s most talked-about new releases.
