Netflix is about to send a brand-new class to Hillman College, and the roster is stacked with both fresh faces and beloved alumni. The highly anticipated sequel to ‘A Different World’ has been building serious momentum since the project was first announced in development, and now, with a premiere date locked in, the full picture of who is returning and who is joining is finally coming together.

The sequel series will premiere on September 24, 2026, exactly 39 years to the day that the original sitcom first debuted on NBC. For fans of the original, that timing is not an accident, and everything about this revival feels intentional.

The New Class Leading the ‘A Different World’ Sequel

Maleah Joi Moon leads the cast as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater, Hillman College, and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape.

Moon previously starred in the Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen alongside Alicia Keys, and was awarded a Tony as Best Lead Actress in a Musical along with a Best Musical Theater Album award for her vocals in that production. Bringing a stage powerhouse into the lead role signals that the show is not playing it safe.

Joining Moon in the new generation of Hillman students are Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel. Kai is notably the daughter of iconic actress Tichina Arnold and Grammy Award-winning producer Carvin Haggin.

The new cast also includes Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Famecia Ward, Dasan Frazier, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith among its expanded lineup. That last addition alone is already generating buzz among fans eager to see where his character fits into campus life.

Original Cast Members Returning to Hillman College

Original stars Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell will reprise their roles and are set to recur throughout the season. The news of their involvement sent waves of excitement through the fanbase when it was first announced.

Guy spoke about rediscovering the character, saying she had missed Whitley and could not wait to see what she is like now, adding that the minute the cast got together, it felt like they had never left. Bell echoed that energy, describing the return as something the cast had wanted for a very long time and noting there had been more than enough time to think of exciting things that could happen not only with the original characters but with all the new students as well.

Seven Hillman alumni in total are set to reprise their roles, with the confirmed list including Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese, Jenifer Lewis as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James.

Additional returning faces include Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and Glynn Turman as Col. Bradford Taylor, with Tichina Arnold stepping in as a new addition playing the character Darlene Duvall, joined by Joshua Suiter as Andre and Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer.

The Creative Team Behind the Netflix Reboot

Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, with the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Bel-Air’ writer describing it as an honor to help reimagine a show that had a profound impact on her own life.

Original series director Debbie Allen, who produced 122 episodes and directed 83 during the show’s original run, will return as executive producer and will direct three episodes, including the premiere. Her fingerprints on the show’s DNA are unmatched, and her direct involvement from the first episode guarantees a tone that honors what came before.

The Bythewoods described ‘A Different World’ as the place where they got their start as writers and where they found each other, calling this return to Hillman a continuation of a legacy rooted in love, purpose, and possibility. That kind of personal investment from the creative team is rare, and it shows in the care being taken with every casting and production decision.

What the ‘A Different World’ Netflix Premiere Means for HBCU Culture

Debbie Allen has pointed out that the original show changed lives and tripled the enrollment of historically Black colleges while giving a strong voice and platform for young Black America. Those stakes have not diminished, and if anything they feel even more relevant now.

The official description of the upcoming sequel describes the show as following a new class stepping onto campus while beloved faces come home. That framing captures exactly the balancing act the series is attempting, honoring a deeply loved original while carving out space for a generation that grew up streaming rather than watching live television.

Netflix has stated that the September premiere date underscores its commitment to honoring the show’s legacy while reintroducing Hillman to a new generation. With a cast this deep and a creative team this invested, the cultural conversation around HBCU representation on television is about to get a major boost.

Whether you watched the original weekly in the late eighties or you are discovering Hillman for the very first time this fall, this is one premiere worth clearing your schedule for, so which returning character or new student are you most excited to see when the doors of Hillman College open again on September 24?
