Russo Brothers Say Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Doomsday’ Doctor Doom Suit Is Their Favorite in MCU History
During the SXSW London talk, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo spoke carefully about their new Marvel film. The event also featured Fortnite co-creator Donald Mustard and was held in front of a large audience in East London. Even though they tried not to reveal too much, they still shared a few interesting details about the project.
One of the biggest topics was the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel universe. This time, he is playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russos revealed that his costume for the film is one of their favorites out of all the Marvel movies they have worked on.
When asked why they liked it so much, Joe Russo did not go into full detail. He simply said, “You’ll have to see.” That short answer made the audience even more curious about what the character will look like on screen.
Anthony Russo added a bit more context. He explained that the design of the costume matches the character in a very strong way. He said, “It’s representative of the character in a way that the costume and the character really, really fit.”
Joe Russo also talked about how they approach characters from the comics. He explained that they try to respect what fans already love while also adding something new. He said, “Part of our challenge has always been that there’s something that we love from the comics, and there’s something that you know other fans of the comics love; sometimes those things are the same thing, sometimes they’re different things.”
He went on to explain that the goal is not to copy comic storylines exactly. Instead, the team uses them as inspiration while building something new for the film audience. He said, “We’re never translating directly from the comics, we’re always adding a new experience that hasn’t been written yet in terms of who these characters can be.”
According to Joe Russo, Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday is a good example of this approach. He said the character combines familiar comic book ideas with new elements made specifically for the movie. He described it as something that feels true to the source material but also different in a fresh way.
Anthony Russo also shared that the film is not trying to continue old storylines in a simple way. Instead, they described it as a reset. He said, “We’re back to phase zero, we’re starting over from scratch.” He also added that the movie is not depending heavily on past events in the Marvel universe.
Joe Russo supported that idea by saying fans should expect changes in the Avengers lineup. He told the audience, “You’re going to see some shifting and changing in the Avengers. Get ready for it.”
While they avoided major spoilers, the directors confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday is still in production and being filmed in the United Kingdom. They also noted that it is one of the most important projects they have worked on in the Marvel franchise.
The film is already generating a lot of discussion online, especially after early footage shown at CinemaCon reportedly revealed Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and the return of other major Marvel characters.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for release on December 18.
