Kevin Feige Teases Ant-Man’s Unexpected New Role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has shared new insight into how Ant-Man will fit into Avengers: Doomsday, giving Paul Rudd’s character Scott Lang a surprising new direction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The information comes from a new profile of Paul Rudd published by The Hollywood Reporter, where Feige spoke about how the character has evolved since his debut in 2015’s Ant-Man.
Scott Lang first appeared as a small-time criminal who became an unlikely hero, later joining major MCU events like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, where he helped deal with the consequences of the Avengers losing to Thanos.
After a quieter return in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which explored the Quantum Realm and introduced Kang the Conqueror, the character’s future became less certain. That film’s ending positioned Ant-Man as someone who may have accidentally contributed to larger multiversal problems, setting up his possible involvement in future Avengers stories.
Now, with Avengers: Doomsday moving forward and Kang no longer the central threat, Feige has revealed a different direction for Scott Lang. He described the character’s new role in a simple but striking way, saying that Ant-Man is now “more of an elder statesman, dealing with other newer characters.”
This suggests that Scott is no longer just a rookie hero or a side player in bigger battles, but someone with experience who may guide younger or newer heroes as the MCU expands further into multiverse-level conflicts. The idea points to a mentor-style version of Ant-Man, possibly working with new teams that are beginning to form within the franchise.
Feige also spoke about why Paul Rudd was the right choice for the role in the first place, highlighting the mix of humor and charm that defines the character. He said, “We needed this guy to be a criminal but also someone that you’re rooting for no matter what, and that’s Paul. He’s also funny and good-looking and unbelievably charismatic.”
Paul Rudd himself also reflected on his journey as Scott Lang, explaining that early interest in the role came from director Edgar Wright’s original vision for Ant-Man. Although Wright eventually left the project, Rudd stayed on and helped shape the character into one of Marvel’s more grounded and relatable heroes.
Looking back at his career, Rudd acknowledged that not every project has been a success, but he embraces the experience. He quoted Tina Fey when discussing less successful films, saying, “Sometimes you do something and you thought the script was great and it really works and then you’re watching it, and all of a sudden the credits come up, and you go, ‘Wow, that one shrunk in the wash.’”
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to bring together heroes from different corners of the Marvel multiverse, setting up a major crossover event. The story will reportedly involve characters from multiple realities facing a powerful new threat that challenges everything they know about their worlds.
The film is currently scheduled for release on December 18, and it will mark another major step in the ongoing expansion of the MCU, with Ant-Man now positioned as a more experienced figure among a new generation of heroes.
