‘By Any Means’ Trailer Teases Brutal KKK Hunt Based on True Story Starring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
The first trailer for By Any Means has been released, giving audiences a look at a tense historical crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The film is directed by Elegance Bratton and is based on real events from the 1960s in the American South.
The movie is set in Mississippi during a time of intense racial violence and civil rights struggle. It follows an unusual partnership between two very different men. Wahlberg plays Gregory Scarpa, a real-life mafia hitman, while Abdul-Mateen II plays FBI agent Wayne Strider. The two are forced to work together to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders and confront members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The story centers on their uneasy alliance. Strider is a federal agent trying to work inside a deeply racist and corrupt system, while Scarpa is a violent criminal with his own agenda. The film uses this pairing to explore how justice is pursued in a world where official systems often fail to protect people.
Director Elegance Bratton, known for The Inspection, told Entertainment Weekly that the film is about “justice moving through corrupted systems,” and also described it as “muscular, entertaining, and haunted.” These comments reflect the tone of the movie, which mixes intense action with heavy real-world themes.
The script was written by Sascha Penn, who previously worked on Power Book III: Raising Kanan. The film aims to balance crime thriller elements with historical events, especially focusing on the violence surrounding civil rights activism in the 1960s.
One of the key figures in the story is civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Dahmer was known for helping Black citizens register to vote in Mississippi. He became a target of the Ku Klux Klan and was killed in 1966 after his home was firebombed. Bratton said that Dahmer’s family was closely involved in the production, and his daughter Bettie Dahmer was present during the filming of the attack sequence.
Mark Wahlberg spoke about the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, describing the reaction from early test screenings. He said the audience response was extremely strong and called the film “one of the great revenge thrillers.”
He also discussed his physical transformation for the role, which involved changes to his appearance to better match the real Gregory Scarpa. Early images show him with longer hair, tinted glasses, and a period-accurate style.
The supporting cast includes Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, Ethan Embry, LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, and David Strathairn. Each plays a role in the broader story of law enforcement, civil rights, and community resistance during a violent period in American history.
By Any Means is set to be released in theaters on September 4. According to the studio and early press coverage, the film aims to combine historical truth with a high-intensity thriller structure, focusing on moral conflict, uneasy alliances, and the pursuit of justice in a deeply divided world.
