Rachel Nickell’s Son Speaks Out Ahead of Emotional Netflix Drama ‘The Witness’
The story of Rachel Nickell and the impact her murder had on her family is being revisited in a new Netflix drama called The Witness. According to reporting from the Mirror, Rachel’s son Alex and her former partner have now spoken publicly ahead of the series release, sharing how they feel more than three decades after the tragedy.
Rachel Nickell was just 23 years old when she was stabbed to death in 1992. The attack happened in broad daylight on Wimbledon Common in London. At the time, she was walking with her two-year-old son Alex. He was the only witness to the killing.
The case shocked the UK and became one of the most well-known murder investigations of the time. Rachel was stabbed 49 times during the attack, and her death led to years of public attention and investigation.
Alex was very young when it happened, but the experience shaped the rest of his life. Over the years, he was even spoken to by investigators as they tried to understand what had happened that day. The story is now being told again through the Netflix series The Witness, which focuses on both the investigation and the emotional impact on the family.
The official synopsis of the series explains the focus of the drama, saying, “With their 2-year-old as the sole witness to her murder, Rachel Nickell’s partner fights to protect him amid a flawed investigation,” according to Netflix promotional material reported by the Mirror.
Ahead of the release, Alex and his father André Hanscombe appeared on ITV’s This Morning to talk about the new series and the real events behind it. They said they had been approached to take part in the project many years ago, but they were careful about how the story would be told and how it could affect Alex emotionally.
André explained that they wanted the series to handle the story in a responsible way. He said, “Our main concern was not to make the same mistakes again. With the best intention in the world, many times there are things we’ve touched upon, it’s easy to be put in a box.”
He also spoke about wanting the story to have a positive message despite its tragic background. He said they hoped it would show that people can survive even very dark experiences and still find a way forward in life.
Alex also shared his thoughts during the interview. He spoke about how difficult the subject still is, but also said he wants people to understand the human side of the story. He said, “It’s important to us, when something big like this happens, sometimes it’s hard to relate to them and we feel that everyone suffering, life can bring all of us to our knees, and everyone has a heart and the suffering of every human being is important, we all feel the same pain.”
The Netflix drama also shows parts of Alex’s life after the tragedy, including the long-term effects of growing up with such a traumatic event in his early childhood. André described parts of Alex’s teenage years as very difficult and said the family wanted to be honest about the struggles while also showing hope.
Alex said in the interview that he is sometimes surprised by how much he remembers from the time of the attack, but he also feels thankful that he can now use his experience to help others understand trauma and healing.
The Witness is set to be released on Netflix on 4 June. It is based on the real-life murder of Rachel Nickell and the years that followed for her family, especially her son Alex, who lived through the event as a child.
