A new trend is taking over the box office, and it is coming straight from the internet. Films and projects that started as viral YouTube or web-based creations are now competing directly with major studio releases in theaters.

After the success of Backrooms last weekend, another internet-born project has now taken the spotlight. The latest leader is The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, which has reportedly overtaken other releases at the box office during its limited theatrical run.

The film earned about 7.8 million dollars in the United States during its first two days. That number placed it slightly ahead of the horror-comedy Mrak film 6, which earned around 7.7 million dollars in its preview window. Industry tracking suggests that The Amazing Digital Circus may reach around 12 million dollars in total U.S. box office revenue during its short theatrical release.

The release also pushed it ahead of other recent internet-originated hits, including Backrooms and Obsession, both of which were created by filmmakers who originally gained audiences on YouTube. This growing pattern has led to discussion about how online creators are now becoming major players in theatrical film distribution.

The Amazing Digital Circus is an animated dark comedy series created by Gooseworx and produced by Glitch Productions. The original pilot episode was released on YouTube in October 2023 and has since reached more than 438 million views, according to platform statistics reported in industry coverage. The series later expanded with additional episodes and was also picked up for streaming distribution by Netflix.

The story follows a group of humans trapped inside a virtual reality circus controlled by an artificial intelligence character. The tone mixes dark humor with psychological themes. Gooseworx has said in interviews that one of the main inspirations for the series was Harlan Ellison’s short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. She also noted a key difference between her approach and the original inspiration, saying, “Caine is a fun, chaotic character, unlike AM who is pure hatred.”

The cinematic release titled The Last Act combines the show’s eighth episode with new finale content that has not yet been released online. The theatrical version is only screening for a limited time between June 4 and June 7. Despite this short window, analysts expect the film to perform strongly because of the series’ massive online fanbase.

The decision to release the finale in theaters first has created mixed reactions among fans. Some viewers see it as a major step for independent animation, while others have criticized the strategy, especially since the finale will still be released for free on YouTube shortly after the cinema run.

The production company Glitch Productions has encouraged fans to request screenings at local theaters, a strategy similar to campaigns used by other online creators. This approach has helped increase availability in some regions, but fans in countries without screenings have expressed frustration online.

The success of The Amazing Digital Circus reflects a larger shift in entertainment, where online series can now generate enough demand to compete with traditional Hollywood films. With Backrooms, Obsession, and now The Amazing Digital Circus all performing strongly, industry analysts say internet-based storytelling is becoming a major force in cinema.

As the limited theatrical run continues, attention is now on whether this trend will keep growing or if it is a short-term wave driven by viral online communities.
