Kit Harington has opened up about filming intimate scenes with Sophie Turner in their new movie The Dreadful, describing the experience as awkward and unusual given their long history together on Game of Thrones.

The comments were made during a Variety “Actors on Actors” conversation with fellow actor Peter Dinklage, and have since been widely reported by entertainment media.

Harington, 39, and Turner, 30, are closely linked through years of working together on Game of Thrones, where they both started as young actors and grew up on the same set over nearly a decade. Turner was just 14 when she began filming the series, while Harington was in his early twenties. Their characters were introduced as part of the same family storyline, which makes their new on-screen relationship feel especially unusual for them.

In the new film The Dreadful, the two actors play romantic partners. The story is set in 15th-century England and follows a woman living in isolation whose life changes when someone from her past returns. The shift from playing family members in a long-running TV series to playing lovers in a dark drama created what Harington described as a strange experience.

Speaking to Variety, Harington explained how he first reacted when he read the script. He said, “It was weird. She sent me the script and I said, ‘Sophie, there’s a lot of us getting it on.’” He added that Turner did not initially realize how many intimate scenes were involved when she recommended him for the role.

He also reflected on how their real-life connection made the filming more complicated. Harington said, “It was gross, but it was fine.” He explained that because he has known Turner since she was a child, he still sees her in a very familiar, almost family-like way, which made the romantic scenes feel uncomfortable at first.

Despite that, he was careful to stress his respect for her work. He called Turner a “phenomenal” actress and praised her preparation and professionalism on set. His comments were echoed by Peter Dinklage, who also worked with Turner on Game of Thrones. Dinklage said he believed she was one of the strongest performers on the show and praised her focus and energy.

The conversation also moved beyond the film itself and into a broader topic about acting choices. Harington said he has recently found himself doing more scenes involving nudity and intimacy across different projects. He admitted that it has made him think more about how these roles might look in the future, especially when viewed by his children.

He said, “I’m weirdly doing a lot of nudity at the moment, and sex scenes. The more I do it, the more I think, ‘I think I should stop.’ I’ve got to start thinking about my kids, like, ‘Why is Daddy always naked on-screen?’”

His co-star Peter Dinklage responded with humor, saying that children will eventually ask questions no matter what, and joked about how those conversations might go when they are older.

The film The Dreadful, directed by Natasha Kermani, marks a very different collaboration for Harington and Turner compared to their long history on Game of Thrones. While the experience was clearly unusual for both actors, they have described it as professional and ultimately manageable.

The discussion has drawn attention mainly because of how closely their past work is tied to family roles on screen. Moving from that kind of relationship to romantic scenes naturally created discomfort, but both actors have emphasized mutual respect and professionalism throughout the process.
