The internet has been running hot with leaks surrounding ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ for months now, and at this point Marvel and Sony’s ability to keep secrets has become almost a running joke among fans.

From early trailer footage to promo art to alleged plot synopsis drops, the fourth MCU Spider-Man film has been anything but airtight. With the movie just weeks away from its July 31 theatrical debut, every new piece of alleged behind-the-scenes material lands with explosive energy online.

The latest leak to catch fire involves a striking image that has circulated widely across social media, depicting Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle carrying a badly injured, red-suited figure that fans immediately identified as Spider-Man. The image prompted fierce debate, with a significant number of viewers questioning whether it could be authentic or simply a digitally enhanced piece of fan art.

Now, according to reporting from MCU Film News and corroborated by Cosmic Circus insider Alex Perez, the image is real, with Perez noting that what circulates online appears to be an earlier version of the shot that has been re-enhanced using Gemini and lost resolution with each pass around the internet.

The authenticity claim carries weight given Perez’s prior track record, and it has added enormous fuel to fan speculation about just how dark the film intends to go with Castle’s role.

The image lands at a particularly charged moment in the ‘Brand New Day’ leak cycle. A separate report from X user @MyTimeToShineHello claims that the Punisher kills Spider-Man in the film, alleging that Peter Parker transforms into a creature known as Man-Spider, forcing Frank Castle to kill him. Multiple outlets, including Polygon, noted that the mutation storyline may adapt “The Six Arms Saga” from the comics, while others pointed to a 2005 crossover arc as another possible source.

A leaked synopsis describes Peter Parker undergoing a genetic mutation that unlocks organic webbing but costs him control of his body, with the street-level story involving Scorpion, the Hulk, and the Punisher shaping up to be unlike any Spider-Man film before it. Whether the Punisher-carrying-Spidey image connects directly to that mutation arc remains unconfirmed, but the timing and context make it hard to dismiss.

Even setting aside the darker plot speculation, the Punisher’s presence in a Spider-Man film remains one of the more daring creative swings Marvel has attempted. Jon Bernthal has described Frank Castle as someone who is “perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” not looking for a buddy or a friend, and certainly not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole he’s in.

Tom Holland has been effusive about the on-screen chemistry that developed during production. Speaking at the Empire State Building event celebrating the film’s first trailer, Holland said he is “so excited for people to see Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in this movie,” adding that Bernthal “absolutely sings” and is “incredible.” Holland also revealed that the dynamic shifted considerably once cameras started rolling. He noted that the relationship between Spider-Man and the Punisher “changed a lot” and “evolved a lot” as they were shooting, because the two actors would improvise.

In a separate interview with Collider, Holland described the Peter and Frank dynamic as one of his favorite aspects of the new film, saying he “wouldn’t be surprised if Spidey and the Punisher become a recurring duo.” Given that the leaked image suggests things between the two might get very complicated before any kind of bond forms, that future partnership sounds like it will be hard-earned.

The Punisher image is just the latest in a long line of pre-release material that has escaped into the wild. A second trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ leaked on June 7, 2026, revealing major plot points including a fight between Spider-Man and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, as well as Sadie Sink’s character potentially connected to Jean Grey and the Phoenix, with Sony Pictures quickly issuing takedown notices for the widely circulated footage. The cast itself is stacked, with Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Michael Mando returning as Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III confirmed as Tombstone all joining Holland in the film.

The film’s villain roster alone has kept fans busy for months, with Tombstone, Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula, and the Hand all confirmed as threats for Peter to face. Against that scale, the leaked image of the Punisher cradling a shattered Spider-Man feels less like a bombshell and more like a natural escalation of everything ‘Brand New Day’ has been teasing since its first trailer dropped.

Whether Peter Parker survives his encounter with Frank Castle remains the question the internet cannot stop asking right now, and with the film arriving July 31, the wait for answers is almost over.
